If you have ever been to a museum and seen the exhibits you know how incredible the old dinosaurs and fossils are. Sometimes, they actually take your breath away.
Many of these museum exhibits are not made of the actual animal, but rather mineral deposits that have replaced and “fossilized” them. There are very few creature specimens from long ago, but these fossils are the best we have.
Sometimes, though, scientists discover mummified animals that have skin, hair, and in rare cases, stomach contents!
This is extremely rare. It might be hard to understand, and the people discovering these creatures can’t comprehend it either. Scientists have found woolly mammoths, Egyptian animal mummies, and other extinct animal types. These animals appear frozen in time with some of them in the act of eating or hunting!
Feel free to comment which is your favorite. Each one has the power to completely take your breath away.
1. Lyuba, a friendly, frozen Woolly Mammoth calf
One of the young animal exhibits, this guy looks stellar! Clearly, something preserved him while he was walking and it’s anyone’s guess what sort of event it was.
2. Cool, naturally mummified Woolly Rhinoceros
This discovery is quite intriguing. We have no clue how the skin has stayed on and looks as good as it does in the photo!
3. The Borealopelta Fossil, including parts of the skin and his last meal
This guy includes what he was eating last in the fossil remains. That’s nuts! This is by far one of the coolest fossils we’ve ever seen!
4. Foot of a Megalapteryx (Upland Moa) near-perfect preservation
We’re going to leave all of our jokes about this one out of the blog. Wonder if this guy was a meat-eater or not? Well, if the shoe fits…
5. 44,000-year-old Cave Lion
At 44,000 years old, this guy has more hair than the average 40-year-old male. Jokes aside, that photo is absolutely astounding!
6. Naturally Mummified Wolf Cub from the Ice Age
That wolf still looks angry. Just snarling at whoever walks by his museum exhibit at this point.
7. 18,000-years-old: wolf or dog
It’s hard to tell between dog and wolf just with this close up picture. If we had to guess, it’s a classic wolf-dog.
8.Foal of a Lena horse that’s been frozen for 30,000 years
Poor horsey. He/she was frozen at a very young age. But the preservation is very impressive.
9. Yukagir Mammoth head (Excavated in 2002)
Almost the whole head was preserved. Wow, very impressive. These scientists look like they don’t know what to say. We would be speechless too!
10. Basilosaurus Skeleton from 30 million years ago found in Egypt’s “Valley of the Whales”
Not going to lie here, if we stumbled across that thing in the desert, excavation would be the last thing on our minds!
11. Fossil of a naturally mummified ‘Edmontosaurus annectens’
Are you wondering what that is, cause we are too? Maybe it’s a cow…no that can’t be right. Hmmm.
12. Hell-Ant perfectly preserved in the middle of a hunt
Imagine being hungry, and just wanting to eat, and then dying with your food in your mouth. That’s terribly humiliating. All he wanted was lunch!
13. Ice Age caribou, naturally preserved
Just a billion-year-old caribou. Not much to see here.
14. An Awesome Egyptian cat mummy!
Love them or hate them, cats have been pets for as long as man can remember. Apparently, they haven’t changed much.
15. A Centrosaurus’s skin impression
Just the skin impression of a dinosaur. It’s impressive, but it’s not the most impressive thing we’ve seen today.
16. Egyptian dog mummy (c. 305 BC – 395 AD)
If we covered cats we have to cover dogs! Canines can’t be left out, especially because they are clearly superior to felines.
