As a child, Holly Garrido’s father told her that women were only beautiful if they had long hair – and those words stuck with her into adulthood.
“She always felt like she needed to keep her hair long because of what her dad said: that a woman must have long hair or she wouldn’t be pretty,” said Holly’s hairstylist Sara Pestella.
Working as a gate guard at a plantation in Destin, Florida, Holly had allowed her hair to grow down to her hips over the years.
Engaged to be married, she knew she was in need of a makeover, but she could have never imagined the dramatic transformation she would get from the stylists at Avant Garde Salon.
To execute the transformation, Pastella teamed up with her co-worker Jeremy Harfield to give Holly a new cut and color.
Harfield did the initial chop, lopping off around 2 feet of Holly’s yellow-blonde hair from a previous dye job.
That left her with nothing but her original color.
After the haircut, Holly already looked like a new person, though she’s clearly used to hiding behind her hair. But not for long!
The color came next and as anyone who has had a dramatic change from light brown/auburn to a non-brassy blonde knows, it takes a long time and multiple steps to get it right without causing too much damage to the hair.
After getting all that hair cut off, the stylists certainly didn’t want to leave Holly with dry, damaged hair.
Pestella’s color work was a four-step process that took a whopping seven hours to complete.
Using Aveda hair color, Pastella didn’t just dye her whole head, but gave her heavy highlights instead, hand-painting on thinner highlights in between. She then painted the ends a lighter color “for additional drama.”
Holly then had her hair toned with a light pastel purple to get rid of any remaining red in her new blonde hair with platinum highlights.
“Holly feels beautiful in her own skin,” Pestella told Modern Salon Magazine.
The 7-hour makeover truly was an overnight transformation – Holly came in at 7 pm and didn’t leave the salon until 2 am!
Pestella reported that the salon has also agreed to give Holly a year’s worth of free services in order to help her keep up with her new look.
“No kidding this transformation was indeed overnight. Thanks to our amazing owners Deke and Joseph she gets to maintain her look for a whole year, free of charge!”
Despite a long day at work, both stylists said they had a blast working with Holly and were thrilled to give her a new look for her wedding day.
In fact, Holly was so inspired by her makeover that she briefly left her job at the plantation to be a receptionist at a salon – there, one of her co-workers convinced her to dye her hair purple! When Salon Magazine caught up with her in April 2019, she still had purple hair but had gone back to the plantation because it had steadier hours.
Despite the twist ending, Holly’s drastic makeover did help Avant Garde Salon win an EC Top Salon award and she even walked down the catwalk for them and posed for photos after their big win.
