When pets really get along with their owners, they’ll stop at nothing to protect them from danger, even if that means that they have to put their own life at peril.

They will absolutely go to extremes to show their protective side, and it’s one of the reasons why it’s often said that dogs are one of the most loyal of species.

The adorable Doberman who listens to the name Khan recently rescued a small toddler, even though it didn’t look like it at first.

In fact, Khan hasn’t exactly had a worry-free and easy life himself. He was adopted by Catherine Svillicic in Australia, and she knew that the four-footer had quite a troublesome past.

The poor Doberman was relentlessly abused by his previous owner, and he even had multiple fractures.

When Khan was rescued, it wasn’t a day too soon because the poor dog was barely hanging on and was within an inch of his life.

“When Kerry Kinder (Doberinling Boarding Kennels owner) rescued him, he was starving, had broken ribs, and had been beaten – he was an abused dog. It was borderline on whether or not he should be put down because he was in such a bad way,” Catherine said to Adelaide Now.

Heavily abused dogs can act very timid or aggressively towards their new owners, even if they’ve done nothing wrong. Sometimes, their faith in humans is irreparable.

According to the kennel staff where Catherine decided to adopt Khan, the Doberman actually displayed some violent tendencies.

It’s not really all that surprising and occurs more often than one might think, but it does make it a much more difficult choice to actually adopt him – especially with a small toddler running around the house.

On the bright side, Dobermans are actually one of the most protective dog breeds out there, even though they’re also aggressive in nature.

“This incomparably fearless and vigilant breed stands proudly among the world’s finest protection dogs,” the website of the American Kennel Club writes. “Loyal, fearless, and alert.”

However, she decided to look past Khan’s worrying history and wanted to give him the attention, care, and love he deserved. She took him back home with her, and it was without a doubt something that she’ll never regret.

Less than a week after he was adopted, Catherine saw how Khan was behaving extremely aggressive towards her 17-month-old toddler Charlotte.

Of course, given the dog’s history, mom made sure to keep a close eye on Khan, especially when he was playing around with Charlotte.

When she saw how the Doberman actually grabbed her and started throwing her around, her heart absolutely sank.

“Khan was really concentrating and was acting aggressively towards Charlotte-and kept trying to nudge her but it wasn’t working,” she recalls. “So he grabbed her by the back of the nappy and threw her over his shoulder more than a meter like she was a rag doll.”

However, she quickly learned that Khan wasn’t trying to attack Charlotte – he was trying to protect her from a king brown snake.

This wasn’t just a regular snake, because king brown snakes are extremely venomous and are considered to be one of the world’s most dangerous serpents.

Khan simply tried to get Charlotte away from the snake and to safety by nudging her.

That clearly didn’t go as planned, so Khan felt like he had no other choice but to actually use his teeth to grab the toddler and take her with him.

It was pretty aggressive, but it worked as Khan made sure that Charlotte was out of harm’s way.

As for the snake, he was just about to attack, but thankfully, Khan’s intervention prevented that.

“Charlotte looked pretty shocked and then Khan screamed. I realized quickly it was a snake and Khan had been trying to get in between her and the snake before he threw her.”

This hero dog rescued the little girl without regard for his own safety!

In fact, he was the one that took the bite of the snake.

Catherine heard him screaming and was wondering what was going on, but the snake bite explains everything.

After the incident, things actually started to look pretty dire. Khan was able to run into the house but then collapsed to the ground.

Luckily, they were able to take him to the vet and he got the help he needed quite quickly. After an anti-venom treatment and one rough night, Khan was already energetic and back to his old self the next morning.

Due to the struggle, the snake wasn’t able to inject all of its venom. If he did, Khan’s chances of survival would be practically zero.

In fact, mom gave him a huge treat in the morning and all the breakfast he wanted. After all, he deserves it!

“If Khan wants a gold bowl, Khan gets it. We owe him for the rest of his life,’’ mom concluded.
