Most brides-to-be spend months choosing their wedding dress.
The bridal gown market was estimated to be worth 32.5 billion US dollars in 2017 and 43.5 billion US dollars this year. The bride’s dress is always one of the highlights of any wedding.
Brides pore over bridal magazines, visit countless wedding websites and try on a few of their favorite styles before finally deciding on the perfect wedding dress.
Veronika Lindberg, or Kika for short, spent a few days looking online for her wedding dress. After a few days of searching, she realized nothing had caught her eye.
So, Kika decided to knit her own wedding dress.
The catch is that she only had 5 weeks to finish her dress.
Kika and her fiancee Juki had recently bought their dream home in Helsinki, and they were planning a housewarming party. In a spur-of-the-moment decision, they decided to get married on the same day as well.
The talented knitter documented her wedding dress journey on her YouTube channel and shared the highs and lows she experienced during this unique experience.
On day 1, she received the rolls of pure silk thread she ordered.
To create her wedding dress, she bought 2.5 kilos of thread that she would steadily transform into her dream dress.
She decided to combine knitting and crocheting to make the dress. Kika didn’t follow a specific pattern but used elements from dresses she liked as inspiration instead.
She also sketched out an initial dress design.
Kika gave her followers regular updates while creating the dress.
She started by making the lace for the front panel of her dress.
“What I’m really enjoying about this project is, since I’m making it as I go along, it’s really engaging. At the same time, I need to put all my focus on it,” she shared.
Kika also shared the setbacks she encountered.
Her first major setback came about when she realized the top of the dress was too baggy.
To fix it, she had to remove the attached panels and redo them. It set her back one to two full days of work, but she was determined to create a dress she was happy with.
Her video also showed her knitting wherever she was, including by the sea, in the woods, and while riding the car.
On day 19 of her wedding dress journey, she experienced another setback.
Kika realized the sleeves she made were too loose and kept falling off her shoulders. To remedy them, she added crocheted sections and soaked the dress, which made the fabric lay nicer.
In the weeks leading up to her wedding, Kika kept her unfinished dress in a tote bag and brought it with her everywhere she went so she could work on it whenever she could.
On day 42, she gave another update, “It’s day 42 and yesterday, I had a real dip. I just feel like this dress never ends and I have to think about all these things we still have to do for wedding.”
In spite feeling overwhelmed, she continued to knit the last few centimeters of her dress.
Finally, on day 45, she finished her wedding dress!
Kika said she was so happy with how the dress turned out. Fortunately, she had a few days to spare to make final adjustments to the finished product.
She spent the day before her wedding finalizing the decor and adding the last few finishing touches to her dress.
On day 50, Kika and her fiancee Juki celebrated their wedding with friends and family.
She wore the beautiful dress she painstakingly made by hand. Even better, they held the memorable event in their beautiful new home.
We love Kika’s positive attitude, her amazing knitting skills, and how she shared her journey.
