Lung cancer is by far one of the most dangerous cancers a person can develop; the American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 1 in 4 cancer deaths are the result of lung cancer. While anyone can get lung cancer, people who smoke are the most at-risk. Although only a doctor can diagnose cancer, if you believe you are at risk, there are 8 common signs of lung cancer of which you should be aware.

Coughing now and then is normal, but if you have a persistent cough, it may be time to make an appointment with your doctor. Coughing is a sign of irritation in the lungs and is one of the earliest warning signs of nearly every type of lung cancer. If you’re a smoker, a change to your cough may also indicate the development of lung cancer.

Shortness of Breath

Everyone experiences shortness of breath sometimes, especially after physical exertion. However, if you are experiencing shortness of breath from basic activities such as getting out of bed in the morning or checking the mail, it may be a sign of a more serious problem such as fluid buildup in the lungs. Like coughing, shortness of breath is one of the earliest symptoms of almost every type of lung cancer.

Wheezing

Having a hoarse voice or wheezing when you breathe is also a common sign of lung cancer, as it can indicate that your airways are swollen or irritated. If you’re a long-term smoker, be aware of what level of wheezing or hoarseness is normal for your own body, so that you have a better chance of detecting any cancer early.

Feelings of tiredness are a common symptom of many illnesses, both run-of-the-mill and severe.

However, persistent and overwhelming fatigue can be a sign of something more serious, like lung cancer.

Recurring Infections

If you have received recurring treatment for infections like bronchitis or pneumonia, but they just won’t go away, you may have lung cancer. Your doctor may be mistaking your lung cancer symptoms for symptoms of these more common infections.

Weight Loss

A sudden loss in appetite combined with weight loss may be a sign of lung cancer. If you’re losing a lot of weight in a short amount of time without trying, it may be your body trying to tell you that something is wrong.

Chest Pain

Experiencing a dull, persistent ache in your chest might indicate lung cancer, as it could be the result of a tumor pressing against the ribs or fluid buildup in the lungs. However, chest pain can also result from more acute conditions, like a heart attack, so call your doctor right away if you experience chest pain.

Back Pain

Like chest pain, developing pain in the back or shoulders might be a sign of lung cancer as tumors press against the spine or ribs. This symptom is especially prevalent in women with lung cancer.

Early detection is key in treating lung cancer and having a good prognosis. If you experience one or more of these symptoms, schedule an appointment with your doctor.
