Rub a lemon rind on your yellowed teeth for a surprising effect

You don’t have to recoil in fear anymore the next time someone tells you to “smile with your teeth.” These 7 methods will help you on your way to making your pearly whites a little brighter. For those of you with sensitive teeth, breath easy. Most of these are gentle enough to not set off your sensitive chompers. Moderation is key.

1. Oil pull using coconut oil
This one is for those with a little more time and patience. Oil pulling is the act of using oil to cut through plaque and toxins in the body. By keeping the oil in your mouth, it “pulls” the bad stuff into the oil, which you spit out, cleaning your body (especially your mouth)! You need 1-2 teaspoons of coconut oil. Put it in your mouth and swish for 20 minutes. The oil will start thickening, but don’t give up. Spit out into the trash as coconut oil has a tendency to glob up in drain pipes, and you definitely do not want that. Rinse with warm water and brush teeth as usual.

2. Strawberries
It seems counterintuitive to use something red to make your teeth white, but it works. This tasty method requires just a handful of strawberries. Smash them into a paste and spread over your teeth. Leave them on for 5 minutes. Rinse and brush.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar
Dab some apple cider vinegar onto a soft cloth. Rubbing in circles, buff your teeth with the cloth. Try to use a thinner cloth so you can get into all the nooks and crannies between your teeth. Flossing with dental string dipped in apple cider vinegar also helps. Brush afterwards.

4. Brushing with baking soda
The next time you brush, reach for the baking soda instead of your regular toothpaste. The naturally gritty texture of baking soda will lift tough stains off of the surface of your teeth. Mix with a little water to make a paste, and brush your teeth with it. Don’t brush too hard, though. It could potentially damage your enamel.

5. DIY toothpaste with a kick
If you want to up the baking soda trick from above, add some hydrogen peroxide. Mix small and equal amounts of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda together to make a paste. You don’t want a dry paste. Aim for slightly runny, so add water or hydrogen peroxide to achieve this consistency.

6. Rubbing lemon peels
The next time you use lemons in the kitchen, save the rinds. You can rub the rinds against your teeth. In addition to whitening benefits, the vitamins in lemons promote good oral health. If you have lemon juice left, mix with some warm water and drink it down.

7. Use a banana instead
The potassium and magnesium in banana peels are supposed to help with enamel stains. Rub the soft, spongy inside of a banana peel against your teeth. Keep your gums and lips away from this paste for about 10 minutes. Try not to eat it! After 10 minutes, brush it off with toothpaste. This will take some time to see results. Repeat everyday for up to two weeks.
