When Sharina Jones was just 5-years-old, she was shot in her lower body and permanently lost the use of her legs.
Thirty years later, Sharina was expecting the birth of her first child but had a few concerns. Given her dependence on her wheelchair, she worried about how she would be able to get around while carrying her newborn at the same time.
That is where a teenager named Alden Kain came in. Kain, a high school student in Detroit, was enrolled into a class that revolved around special design.
At just 16-years-of-age, Alden was tasked with creating a unique wheelchair and baby stroller combo that Sharina could use for her day to day routine.
Kain tested multiple designs, but ultimately created a backward facing strolling that attach to the front of Sharina’s own wheelchair.
By creating wheels that are level with the wheelchair Sharina uses, Alden was able to integrate a full stroller that would be placed directly in front of Sharina.
The stroller is composed of a baby car seat attached to a specially designed frame meant to attach to the wheelchair.
Alden’s innovation came through strong and Sharina was seamlessly able to integrate the new stroller into her own wheelchair.
“It was extremely exciting and rewarding to see Sharina using it,” Alden told reporters.
Alden took six months of research and development to reach his ultimate goal, but within a matter of months, he created the perfect tool for Sharina to share with her newborn child!
