Not so fast! Before you all run out and cut your hair off because I’m about to show you it’s possible to wear it in more than one style, I think we need to address whether or not you should cut your hair short.

The reality is, not everyone is going to look good with short hair. And with a little bit of searching, I found there is something called the Ruler Rule.

What is the Ruler Rule?

Let me allow Schwarzkopf Professional to answer that question.

“The ‘Ruler Rule’ is a formula that lets you find out quickly if a short haircut will be a hit or a flop. All you need to do is measure and calculate. Complicated? No, really easy. All you need is a ruler (or measuring tape) and a pencil. The idea of the measuring rule: The tilt angle of the jawbone decides who looks more attractive with shorter or longer hair.”

Here’s what you need to do.

Measure your face, from the tip of your earlobe to your chin. To do this, you want to take a pencil and hold it horizontally at your chin. Then take the ruler or measuring tape and hold it vertically. Now measure the distance between the bottom of your ear to the pencil. Straight down.

Depending on the answer, you may look good with a short cut. If the distance between the two points is less than 2.25 inches or 5.5 centimeters, you can feel confident that a short style will suit you. If it’s longer than that, there is a very good chance you won’t be happy with the result of a short cut, because you don’t have the right shape face for it.

Hate math? You can also judge by the shape of your face.

The ruler test is said to be foolproof, but you can also get a good idea if a short style will suit you based on the shape of your face.

Oval Face. If you have an oval-shaped face, you can book that appointment with your stylist now. You’ve got the perfect face for any short hairstyle.

Heart-Shaped Face. Pixie cuts are the best style for you. The only thing you want to watch out for is adding too much volume on top.

What are some of the advantages of shorter hair?

Let’s assume you’ve taken your measurements and they say you’ll look great with a short cut. Maybe that isn’t enough to convince you though.

Here are a few reasons that might convince you.

Your shampoo and conditioner will last longer. This is pretty much a no-brainer. Less hair means less product.

You won’t need to spend as much time every morning styling your hair. Sure, if you have longer hair you can just put it back in a pony, but with a short style, you won’t even have to do that.

If you do cut your hair short, you’re getting rid of a lot of potentially damaged or dead hair. So your hair will be healthier.

Can you style your short cut multiple ways?

You sure can!

As a matter of fact, a simple layered bob can be styled in at least four different ways. Dominique Sachse, an evening news anchor in Houston has a bob and has shared some styling techniques with her viewers on her YouTube Channel.

I’ll share three with you’re here, but the link to the video is below, so you can watch the full video for the fourth style.

This first shot is her hair when she gets out of bed in the morning before she’s styled it. And I have to say this makes me insanely jealous.

Now let’s see her 4 different styles. And note that they’re all done quickly and easily.

Her first look is what she calls a clean bob that she parts in the middle. She uses a big round brush and her blow dryer to give herself some lift on top after finding her center part.

She then smooths out the sides of her hair by pulling it straight while blow-drying. After a little teasing on top and some hairspray, she’s done.

Her next look is something she likes to wear in the evening, especially if she has some nice earrings she wants to show off.

For this, she loses the center part and switches up to a very deep side part. She then uses the blow dryer to smooth the hair on that side off of her face. On the other side of her face, she creates a sweeping look.

Her next look is again something she would wear in the evening, especially if she was wearing something high collared. It’s a loosely pulled back look, with all of her hair off her face.

She uses her blow dryer to get some volume at the roots and then teases her hair to give it some lift.
