Nothing is worse than having your skin break out — especially if you’re into your 20s or even older. After all, you need to keep up a professional look for work! Unfortunately, breakouts happen well into adulthood.
There are many different reasons that you might experience a breakout. It could be a problem with your skincare routine. Maybe you need to adjust your diet by eating more skin-friendly foods. Here are seven foods that could be the cause of your breakouts.
1. Sugar
It’s no secret that sugar can cause you to get pimples. But we don’t just mean desserts like cookies, cake, and pie. Sugar also hides in places that we don’t expect. Foods like bread, chips, pretzels, and pasta can contain a lot of sugar, so it’s better to steer clear of those.
2. Dairy
Dairy isn’t a proven cause of acne, but higher consumption of it has been linked to more breakouts. Dairy products also contain high levels of sugar, which may be the cause. Though more studies are needed, early ones indicate there may be a correlation.
3. Fast Food
This one is pretty widely known, so it probably comes as no surprise that hamburgers and fries could be making your skin worse. Studies have shown that diets high in fat are associated with a 43 percent higher risk of acne breakouts. Also, the regular consumption of fast food is associated with a 17 percent higher risk.
4. Omega-6 Fatty Acids
If you’re not familiar with what fatty acids are, they’re the kind of fats found in vegetable and other similar oils. While these oils can have some health benefits, they can also be bad for your skin. Unfortunately, Western diets are typically rich in these oils.
5. Chocolate
Experts have suspected that chocolate can cause acne breakouts since all the way back in the 1920s. Researchers aren’t exactly sure why that happens, but some people think that chocolate triggers the immune response to bacteria, which assists in the development of acne.
6. Whey Protein
Most people probably don’t consume whey protein on a regular basis. However, it’s a popular choice for individuals dedicated to bodybuilding and weightlifting. It’s usually consumed in the form of protein powder or workout shakes. If you’re committed to weightlifting and use protein powder to help bulk up, keep an eye on the ingredients to protect your skin.
7. Foods You Don’t Tolerate
There are a lot of reasons that acne can occur, but some researchers think it could be due in part to an immune response similar to an allergic reaction. For this reason, it’s suspected that if you have an intolerance to a specific type of food, eating that could cause an acne breakout. Pay attention to the foods that you don’t tolerate well and avoid them — not only for the sake of your stomach but also your skin.
