As we age, our skin loses some of its collagen. Along with that goes its ability to fight off wrinkles. Fine lines start to show, and then they only get bigger from there.
Sure, we could just embrace it.
However, there are some days when no one really wants to do that. These tutorials are for those days.
A renowned international makeup artist, Kristen Arnett, shows us all the tips and tricks for blending, hiding, and just making those lines fade away.
Let’s get started.
Finding that balance
The first thing that Kristen notes is that there is a balance between too much and two little makeup that becomes more important as we age.
Too much makeup, while concealing, can actually cake on and cause us to look older by enhancing wrinkles. On the other hand, too little makeup will still show the signs of aging.
Obviously, we don’t want to go in either of those directions when seeking to attain this near-flawless look!
Start with nourishing the skin
Before putting on any makeup, Kristen suggests using a rich moisturizer to help plump out wrinkles on the face and hydrate the skin. Dry skin shows age more quickly than anything.
After applying the moisturizer, give it a few minutes to really soak in and absorb before moving on to applying makeup.
Things that are also important are getting enough sleep, reducing stress, and staying hydrated through drinking enough water. However, we know not every day is perfect, and that’s why there is makeup!
Go with a lightweight foundation
To avoid accidentally highlighting lines and wrinkles, avoid the heavy foundations and go with something on the light side. When it comes to the color, match it with your skin tone as closely as possible.
Pick the right foundation color for your skin
Kristen notes that if your foundation is going to be lighter or darker than your skin, no matter how close you get the match, it’s actually better to err on the side of darker.
This is because if you go too light, you will end up looking unnaturally pale or ill. Part of the vibrance of youthful skin is the color behind it. Losing that creates a more aged and unhealthy appearance.
Applying foundation to the face
While using a brush to apply foundation is perfectly acceptable, Kristen actually suggests using your fingers to really melt the foundation into the skin and to help it bond more deeply and evenly.
She does, however, note that it requires a light touch. If you apply the foundation too vigorously, you’ll actually end up wiping it away in spots. Again, it’s all about finding the right balance.
Patting it is one way to make sure that the makeup stays where you apply it. Using a circular motion also helps to make sure that the makeup spreads evenly rather than depositing in just a few spots.
Don’t forget around the eyes
Pay extra attention to the area under the eyes when applying foundation. It’s worth it to concentrate on the skin there and make sure it has a little extra coverage.
Next, apply concealer to the eyelids, the same as you would eyeshadow. This is because, as we age, the skin thins there, and we begin to see more veins and other signs of aging. Covering it can remove years from your look.
Remember the neck area
On most women, the spot at the top of the neck under the chin will be lighter. This is simply due to how the chin blocks it from the sun in our day-to-day life. Over the years, the extra protection leads to paler and less sun-damaged skin in that one spot.
To even things out and not leave this minor oddity visible, make sure to move down the neck and give it some coverage after applying foundation to the face.
