A fever is your body’s response to an infection. As your temperature rises, immune cells are able to fight infection more efficiently. Your skin feels flushed. Your muscles start to ache. Your head begins to pound. You may want to turn to relief, and though it is recommended that you allow the fever to run its course, some high fevers can be especially harsh, and there are some natural remedies that can help you out along the way.
Yarrow Tea
Be forewarned, yarrow tea actually induces fever, but it can help you break one as well. A hot cup of yarrow tea will make you sweat by opening up the pores of your skin. This process will help with detoxification and will eventually help to reduce the fever as well.
Elderflower Tea
Elderflower tea also helps to promote sweating, helping to break a fever. Most fevers are accompanied by a cold or flu. Elderflower tea will also fight inflammation in the nose and throat, helping to break your fever and get back to feeling like yourself.
Ginger
Ginger, whether used in tea form or as a culinary ingredient, is power-packed with antioxidants that will help your body fight off the infection quickly. Ginger is also rather spicy and could have you sweating out that fever in no time. Ginger tea is very soothing to your throat and sinuses.
Spicy Foods
Spicy foods, such as cayenne or other hot peppers, contain capsaicin, which will help make you sweat and improve overall blood circulation. Add a little spice to your life!
Vinegar
Vinegar is used in many home remedies for fever. Add half a cup of vinegar to a warm bath, and soak for 10 minutes. Mix a cup of vinegar into a bowl of warm water, and use a washcloth to create a warm compress for your forehead. You can also soak potato slices in vinegar and apply to the forehead with a washcloth on top for 15-20 minutes.
Echinacea
Echinacea is an all-natural immune booster. It fights microbial and viral infections, too. Echinacea is available in many herbal teas and in supplement form.
Wet Sock Treatment
Before bed, soak your feet in warm water while soaking a pair of socks or a washcloth in cold water. When you remove your feet from the warm water, apply the slightly wringed-out socks or washcloths to your feet, then cover them with a pair of dry socks to lock the moisture in. This procedure sends messages to your brain to send more blood to your lower extremities, which improves blood flow, increases circulation, and helps your body recover from sickness more swiftly in the process.
Cold Compress
One of the easiest ways to get quick relief from a nasty fever is to create a cold compress. Soak a clean washcloth in a bowl of water and ice, wring it out, and apply it to your forehead for 10-15 minutes. Repeat the process once or twice per hour until the fever subsides.
Most fevers don’t require any medical appointments but consult a physician if the fever is severe (over 105 degrees) or lasts over 72 hours, or if the fever is accompanied by shortness of breath, neck pain, or a severe headache. In addition to these home remedies, stay hydrated, eat healthily, and get well soon.
