Some may think it’s a nervous habit. Some say it’s an unhealthy obsession. Either way, why do we bite our nails? You’ve probably asked yourself this before, and can’t find any reasonable solution as to why. Well contrary to popular belief, it turns out that biting your nails is actually a good sign.
How can this be? According to a study done by the Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry, biting your nails may not actually be an act of nervousness or anxiety, but of perfectionism.
Its true! In the study, 48 participants, half of which possessed repetitive physical behaviors, were selected and surveyed. The survey discovered that the half with those with nail biting qualities identified as organizational perfectionist.
Nail biting was found to help relieve the stress and anxiety caused by overworking and overplanning, tendencies commonly found in perfectionists.
If you do find yourself biting at your nails all the time, it might just be time to check if you’re a perfectionist. Here’s some more signs of perfectionism.
1. You think in ‘all or nothing’ terms
2. You find sadness in failure
3. You’ll wait until the perfect moment to fulfill a task
4. You set extremely high standards for yourself
