Joe Daley from Ohio has been filming footage of his days with his mother, who suffers from dementia. Dementia is a disease that occurs often, even at younger ages. When someone suffers from dementia, the brain can’t process information normally which leads to memory loss and a state of severe confusion.
When Joe takes his 67-year old mother to a local restaurant and asks her who she thought he was – the answer is truly heartbreaking. He asked if she knew who she was eating with, and where they met. She responds faint-heartedly and says they met in school. To the question “Who am I?“, she answers “I don’t know“.
Daley has been documenting their time together in a YouTube series and the heartbreaking moment was filmed in Episode 6. Joe said the day went by fine and they just had a fun trip to the mall and the hair salon until he asked his mom a couple of questions in the restaurant. A few moments after, he heard the words that no son wants to hear. Joe calls it the worst day of his life.
Joe Daley creates the videos with his mothers to draw attention to dementia and because he truly wants to make a difference. He wants to show the world how tough it can be to deal with dementia in the family. In the meantime, Joe has filmed thirteen more episodes and plans to keep making videos about their life together so that more people can understand what it’s like to deal with dementia.
