Seconds after mom births baby in backseat, car crashes & mom can’t find newborn anywhere

May 25th, 2020

We have seen unusual places to give birth before, but nothing quite like this. A woman gave birth to her daughter during a car accident. Worst thing, they couldn’t spot the baby afterwards.

A few weeks ago, Crystan Graham found herself in the backseat of her mom’s SUV, along with her older daughter, while her mom was rushing her to the hospital, as she was already in active labor.

This is what happened in Lilburn, Georgia, in mid-April. It had been raining and the road was wet, so Krystal Jones had to both drive as fast as she could to make it to the Gwinnett Medical Center in time, and watch out because the road was slippery.

At some point, and as they were driving down Lawrenceville Highway, they crossed the road and crashed into the gate of the BAPS Hindu Temple. Funny thing, the baby had just been born.

“As soon as she came out of me,” new mom Crystan told Inside Edition, “and I was about to grab her as soon as she came out, the car went crazy and after the car had stopped, I started to try to look for her and she was not crying.”

So, the woman looked for the baby at the back of the car but she couldn’t find it anywhere. Then she got out of the car, grabbed her other daughter and started crying for help as did her mother.

Luckily, officer Danny Bride happened to be driving by the scene just seconds before the accident, and so did officer Cepeda Huff. The two men, along with Sergeant Matt Madden, who arrived moments later, started looking for the newborn.

Both the mother and the grandmother were in shock and couldn’t help the officers who were trying to spot the baby in the chaotic dark night.

The women’s shock was such, that when they were asked several times where the baby was, Jones replied “In [my daughter’s] womb”.

The officers had a difficult job to do. As the windows of the car had been smashed by the crash and there was debris everywhere, they started to fear that the baby might have been tossed through the window.

“We thought the baby might have gone out the window because there was so much debris in the back,” officer Bride explained during an interview with FOX 5. “Our concern was whether the baby got tossed into the backseat or got tossed through the window.”

At that point, and while they were thinking if they would be able to spot a newborn through the mud around them, Bride thought he saw what seemed like a part of the umbilical cord under the seat and asked Huff to check it out.

“There is like a small little drop-off under the seat,” Huff said. “And that’s where the baby laid right into a little pocket. And that’s where I found her.”

They had just found her. The little baby was moving and it seemed to be in good condition. The officer scooped it carefully from under the seat and transferred it to the ambulance that had arrived.

The little baby spent the next days at the NICU of the Gwinnett Medical Center, while her mother and grandma publicly thanked their “angels” the officers that rescued her.
