A farmer from Texas had had chickens for most of his life, but one day, he was in for quite a shocking surprise when he went to collect the eggs in the morning.
There was one chicken that grasped his attention because the animal kept laying incredibly large and unusual eggs.
Sometimes, they were even three times as large as all the other eggs!
It’s always said that chickens at home produce better quality eggs and that these eggs are certainly a step above eggs you can buy in stores. Larger eggs are also quite handy if you’re hungry, of course!
When he decided to crack open this large egg, he only expected to find a yolk. However, there was a lot more in there than just a yolk.
In the large egg, there was another egg inside.
The second, smaller one had the size of a normal egg.
We know what you’re thinking: eggception!
Laying an egg in another egg is certainly very unusual, and the farmer from Texas had no idea how this happened.
He does re-iterate that the chicken, in particular, had been laying very large eggs for the past week or so, but it never seemed to cause any discomfort or physical pain.
The farmer didn’t think much of the whole thing- until he cracked open this special egg, that is.
“What’s inside? A double egger. Ya, who’s got the best chickens? No double yolks, that is for wimps. We have double eggers,” the man joked in the video.
You might ask yourself the question, how is an egg within another egg actually possible?
There’s a scientific term for everything, as this is actually called a counter-peristalsis contraction.
When the oocyte is released by the chicken, which eventually will become the yolk, the actual forming process of an egg can begin. A double egg can occur when the chicken releases another oocyte before the first one is actually fully developed.
It’s something that doesn’t occur very often, according to Backyard Poultry, and it’s definitely special.
For this farmer, it seems like only one of his chickens has the unique ability to lay these rare double eggs.
The farmer then decided to crack both of the eggs in the bowl, and the insides were basically identical – there’s no way to tell the difference as both yolks were just as big.
Another case of double eggs was recently documented by a woman named Linda Alvarado in Britain.
There was one difference, however – the main egg was regularly sized, and there was actually a super tiny second egg inside.
The shell was still soft, and it was clear that it wasn’t fully formed either. The process is the same, this is also a case of counter-peristalsis, but the end result was clearly different.
“However, in this case, the oocyte that was released in the first egg … was tiny because the ovary had released an oocyte out of order. Usually, hens ovulate daily in order of size – laying the largest, most developed oocyte first. The hen’s ovary is simultaneously preparing smaller oocytes for release at a later time. Occasionally, a small, underdeveloped oocyte jumps the queue,” the specialized Backyard Poultry website writes.
In any case, the video shared by the farmer from Texas has received plenty of attention online, and people couldn’t believe what they were seeing.
In fact, the video has already amassed over twelve million views.
“I thought double egg yolks was impressive but this way more impressive,” one YouTuber wrote.
“That’s peculiar, but it’s so egg-citing to see,” another joked.
