Of course, every wedding day is special, and it’s a moment you look forward to almost your entire life. These days of celebration are ones people never forget, but for this woman, her wedding day will be unforgettable for another reason as well.
Rachel Taylor, a newlywed wife, saved someone’s life moments after she got married while still in her wedding dress.
To say that it’d be an unforgettable wedding day for the 22-year-old woman and her husband Calvin would be an understatement.
These two high school sweethearts met each other back in 2012 and have already been together for over eight years.
On Father’s Day 2020, they were officially husband and wife.
Rachel works as a nurse, and while saving peoples’ lives is definitely what she does, she certainly didn’t expect to save a life on her own wedding day, let alone dressed in her bridal gown!
The wedding ceremony was small but beautiful. When they returned home, they stumbled upon a traffic accident.
There was a social event after the outdoor ceremony, and late in the evening, they all headed back home. On the road back in South St. Paul, it quickly became clear that something severe had happened.
The bride stepped out of the car and immediately rushed towards the crashed vehicle, as there was no medical assistance on the scene.
Dressed in her gorgeous wedding gown, Rachel approached the crashed vehicle to see if there were people who needed help.
“I saw a couple of people dragging a woman over to the side of the road. I could see a gash in her right leg. I think I saw her bone in it,” she recalls.
It turns out that a young man, the son of Tammy Peterson, was involved in a fender bender accident a while before. Tammy received a phone call from her husband while she was still home and immediately jumped into her own car to see if her son was okay.
Tammy arrived at the scene, but then a second accident happened.
Right after she arrived, a black SUV crashed into the back of her own van, which caused quite the chaos and havoc.
Tammy herself was pinned between two cars, and she was in immense pain due to a broken leg.
The poor woman started panicking but then noticed Rachel running towards her dressed as a beautiful bride in white.
“I remember her walking up saying, ‘My name is Rachel, I’m a nurse.’”
Luckily, Rachel did an excellent job of keeping Tammy calm until further help arrived.
She could actually compare it to the pains that laboring moms experience, and used her nursing training and experience to prevent Tammy from panicking even more.
“I got pretty good at talking them through and calming them down. So, I was saying a lot of the same things. I just went into nurse mode.”
As for Tammy, she couldn’t be happier that Rachel was there and isn’t even sure that she would’ve made it without her.
“She kept me calm. … I think she helped save my life even more, you know, just physically and mentally being there at that time.”
Rachel’s husband Calvin saw it all happen and couldn’t praise his newlywed wife enough.
“On our way back to our home after an amazing and beautiful wedding day, literally blocks from our new home, we saw a large SUV crash into another accident involving three other vehicles. As we pulled over, we saw people pulling a woman from between two cars with a gash in her leg that went down to her femur. My rock star of a bride gets out of the car, wedding dress and all, and rushes over to help while I called 911,” he posted on his Facebook page.
Rachel didn’t leave Tammy’s side until the EMTs finally arrived.
“She held her for at least 15 minutes until the EMTs got her on a stretcher. I am so blessed to have a wonderful wife who will always take care of people who need it, and we were blessed that we were able to be in the right place at the right time to make a difference.”
Luckily, Tammy made a full recovery, and she has the hero bride Rachel to thank for that.
“I am still blown away that she got out of the car in a scary situation to do what she does best. I can’t wait for a hospital to scoop her up so she can make a difference in people’s lives every day.”
As for Rachel and her husband Calvin, they went on a beautiful honeymoon to Montana.
Some heroes wear capes, but this hero wore a wedding gown. What an absolutely amazing nurse!
