When Kevin and Toni got married over 30 years ago, they both looked a lot different. But Toni never could have imagined the effect the death of Kevin’s mother would have on his appearance.
A handsome man regardless of style, he had refused to get a standard haircut since his mom passed away 16 years prior. And now it was time to let some things go.
He was chosen for a makeover on the Rachel Ray Show, courtesy of stylist extraordinaire Stacey London.
We all have our own ways of coping with the death of a loved one – and sometimes other people just don’t understand them. Nevertheless, they make us feel closer to someone who’s gone, and that’s all that matters.
For Kevin, one of his final, sacred memories with his mother involved her asking him to shave her head. And they both did it together in solidarity, with Kevin’s daughter cutting his locks.
Since that day, he’s never been able to think of his hair in quite the same way.
“After we lost her,” Kevin said with a trembling voice, “I decided I was going to grow my hair…”
And in those 16 years, he’s donated to Locks of Love 4 times! The charity collects virgin hair to make wigs for disadvantaged young people who have lost their hair from burns, cancer, alopecia, and more.
Time for a change
Ray and stylist Stacey London listened to Kevin’s heartfelt story while they planned his well-deserved makeover.
With his wife by his side, Kevin still felt a little nervous because he knew the makeover would be a drastic one and he hadn’t seen what he looked like under all that hair (which included a big, bushy, white beard) in a long time.
But he was also excited.
When asked if she had a “roadmap” for the makeover, London indicated it would be head to toe and the first thing to go would actually be the t-shirts! (Or at least she was going to spruce up the t-shirts and jeans and made sure he had clothes that actually fit him.)
And, of course, it was bye-bye hair!
Once again, they would donate to Locks of Love since his hair was unprocessed, so long, and in such great condition.
London pulled back Kevin’s ponytail and took out the scissors with glee!
And like she had just hunted down a great prize, she held the severed ponytail up in the air as an indication that Kevin would come out looking like a whole new man.
The new Kevin
London seemed to have a great time not only making the first chop but restyling Kevin.
A separate hair team backstage took care of his new tresses and facial grooming while she chose a rugged but pulled-together look for him.
This was his “before” photo:
He got the keep the jeans, but now they fit! And they were topped off not with a t-shirt but with a button-up and sport coat.
And he looked amazing.
Squeals of glee rang out in the audience and on stage as the women watched him walk out – same man, new look. And there’s nothing else about Kevin that needed changing.
London said he was incredibly kind and easy-going, which is precisely what we’d imagine for a man who had such a sentimental attachment to his hair to begin with.
But you must be sure to scroll down below to see his new look. What a stunner!
