Let’s face it. Dentists are very expensive and sometimes just plain scary, but if you are experiencing tooth pain, you need to go see one as soon as possible. But until you have the time and money to schedule an appointment, use these home remedies to get some relief.
Salt Water
Stir half a teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm water until it dissolves, and swish the mixture around in your mouth for 30 to 45 seconds, then spit it out. This process will clear away any food particles that may be stuck in your teeth and minimize swelling.
Clove Oil
Clove oil is a natural numbing agent. Use a Q-tip to apply the oil directly to the sore tooth (or teeth). Be careful not to get the clove oil on any sensitive gum tissue, as it may actually worsen your pain if you do. The numbing effect of clove oil is similar to Orajel or other over-the-counter numbing gels.
Hydrogen Peroxide
To kill off the germs and bacteria in your mouth that may be responsible for your throbbing toothache, swish around a mixture of one part hydrogen peroxide and one part water in your mouth for 30 to 45 seconds, then spit it out. Rinse thoroughly with water several times afterward to make sure the hydrogen peroxide is cleared out completely.
Peppermint Tea
Peppermint leaves contain a numbing agent that could bring some temporary relief to mild tooth pain. Have a cup of peppermint tea, and place the used tea bag into the refrigerator for 30 minutes or more. Put the tea bag on the area of your mouth that is causing you pain, and allow it to cool and soothe the inflamed area for 20-30 minutes.
Coconut Oil
Oil pulling is one of the best ways to rid the mouth of harmful bacteria that causes tooth pain. Put a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth, and swish it around as if it were a mouthwash for 15 to 20 minutes. Then brush your teeth.
Myrrh
Another way to kill bacteria and fight inflammation is with myrrh. Steep one teaspoon of powdered myrrh in two cups of water for 30 minutes. Put one teaspoon of the mixture in a half cup of water, and use like mouthwash five to six times per day.
Garlic
A crushed garlic clove or minced garlic applied directly to a diseased tooth will help heal the infection. Leave the garlic on the tooth, and chew it lightly for around five minutes.
Even mild tooth pain can really put a damper on your days. It can be tough to eat, sensitive to hot or cold liquids, painful to talk, and difficult to get to sleep. Taking a trip to your dentist’s office should be priority number one, but until you get around to it, use these remedies to alleviate the pain and help you make it through the day.
