When it comes to jeans almost everyone has them in their wardrobe. Most women own lots of blue pairs, but maybe a white or black pair too.

A fashion staple

Blue jeans- or any color, really- is a wardrobe staple first of all because they are extremely versatile. You can wear your favorite pair of jeans at work, or when you go out with your friends, be it for brunch or coffee wearing your favorite T-shirt and sneakers to make a casual yet stylish look, or for dinner and drinks wearing a pair of high heels to upgrade your look.

For all occasions

You can also wear jeans when you do some gardening work at home, or when you walk your dog in the evening. There really is almost no occasion in which you can’t wear your favorite denim piece.

So, a reasonable question is: since we’re wearing our jeans almost daily, when is it advisable to wash them?

Should we wash them after every wear? Once per week? Once per month? Or maybe after a year of use?

There really is no right answer here. Opinions are divided, but what prevails will make your jaw drop: experts agree you can go even a year without washing them. How wrong does that sound?

The truth

Well, it probably sounds crazy, but designers agree that the longer you wear your jeans before you wash them, the more they will become “yours”, meaning they will get the shape of your body.

Others recommend a wash after ten uses or so, which sounds reasonable, while they advise you “go by the smell”. So, if it starts to smell bad earlier, then it means it’s time for a wash.

Of course, how quickly the jeans start to smell bad depends on a number of things, for instance humidity or the kind of work you do when you wear them.

There are some tips for denim washing that many of us have no idea about, and experts are sharing with us in order for our jeans to “live” longer.

Never, ever do this

First of all, you should never, or almost never, put them in the dryer. Let them air dry since this is the safest way. Let’s not forget that they should be washed in cold water, turned inside out, and using mild detergent.

This helps the material last longer, while it is also good for the environment.

More specifically, by washing the jeans less often, you help save the planet. No excess use of energy and no use of detergent. Sounds good to us!

And what about stains? No, there’s no need to dump them in the washing machine. A little detergent and water on the spot should suffice.

And, if you’ve heard of the tip “put them in the freezer and get rid of smells”, just remember it doesn’t seem to work.

“With regards to freezing your jeans, if your aim is to make your jeans cold then yes it’s a great way to do that,” Naked and Famous’ Bahzad Trinos said. “But it won’t help remove the stink.”

Now you know. There’s no need to wash your jeans often for their own sake and for the sake of the planet.

A friendly reminder

Just remember to smell them every couple of days just to be on the safe side, and you’ll hopefully be fine for more than 6 months!

Let us know how often you wash your jeans. We’d love to hear it!
