When people go on vacation, it’s time to relax and not think about your responsibilities for a little while. Whether you’re exploring a new area or even a new country all by yourself or with loved ones, in the end, going on a trip is always a little bit exciting.
As a tourist, it’s okay to only think about yourself, after all – you’re on vacation! However, when you spot a helpless stray animal in the streets, every animal lover’s heart shatters, whether you’re there on vacation or not.
A tourist who was visiting Romania at a beautiful resort when, suddenly, she spotted a stray dog when she went outside.
Unfortunately, stray dogs are a lot more common than many may think. Even though there are many animal shelters around the world, there are still an immense amount of dogs and cats who don’t have a place to call home.
Whenever you see a stray four-footer, it’s just quite pitiful to witness. Sometimes they hang around in alleys completely helpless, and sometimes they’ll try to roam the busier streets hoping someone would rescue them.
Sadly enough, there aren’t a lot of tourists who were even remotely interested in these poor animals, but this woman was certainly the exception to the rule.
She simply couldn’t stand by and watch how these animals in need were neglected and ignored.
She immediately got her phone and called for help.
Apparently, the woman knew of an animal organization named Howl of Dog, and she immediately told them about this one stray dog in particular. They promised to send someone over.
While the woman waited, she went on a little investigative journey of her own and asked the people in the neighborhood if they knew anything about this poor female pooch.
When she visited the owners of a small local store, she learned the heartbreaking truth – this dog had been homeless for years and years.
Everyone knew who this dog was, and a lot of people also seemed to remember that the canine had to eat scraps and junk, sometimes even begging humans for just a little bit of dinner.
As you can see in the pictures, her life on the streets has resulted in a very poor medical condition. She was ill, malnourished, and dehydrated.
Rescuers arrived at the scene, and they promised the tourist that they would help this four-footer out.
They also gave her a name: Helen.
The poor thing clearly wasn’t doing well, and the rescuers feared that she suffered from numerous diseases.
The shelter was more than two hours away, but the most important thing is that Helen was finally taken off the streets.
After all those years, her future finally looked brighter again.
When she first went to the vet for a check-up, the doctor estimated that she’d been homeless for more than six years. Helen was finally able to get medical care, and it’s a wonder that she actually made it this far.
The dog was also diagnosed with Anaplasmosis, a rather rare disease that is the result of many tick bites.
Luckily, Helen clearly had a strong will to fight, and her condition at the shelter gradually but surely improved.
After her condition greatly improved, the shelter put her up for adoption so she could start searching for her loving forever home.
It didn’t take long before a family showed up at the shelter and just fell in love with her.
This poor pooch spent over six harsh years on the streets completely by herself, but she finally found a loving and caring family, and a place to call home.
