A lot of children look up to the men and women who serve and protect, and a nine-year-old girl Klynn Scales was one of them.

The girl definitely didn’t have an easy life at home when she grew up, and she often had to deal with abuse and severe neglect, along with her two brothers who were even younger than her.

Luckily, there was one man who kept giving her hope.

That man was a police officer who checked on her and her brothers every single day, and the gesture made her life that much better.

Unfortunately, as a child, Klynn never got the learn the police officer’s name – even after he saved her life once. It was a mystery for the girl, and as she grew up, she never found out who her hero police officer was.

Over twenty years later, that finally changed.

Klynn found out who the police officer was that checked on her daily and saved her life, and was finally able to thank him.

When Klynn was little, she often had to go to sleep on an empty stomach. Her mother was dealing with a severe addiction, which caused plenty of stress and troubles at home. Because her mom didn’t take care of her at all, Klynn actually resorted to criminality.

She specifically recalls a 7-11 store in the area, where she often stole food just to be able to feed herself as well as her two younger brothers. She did all of this at just nine years old, simply because she felt like she had no other choice.

Because of the stealing, Klynn met Officer Jeffrey Colvin who quickly learned about her dire situation at home.

Officer Colvin would have such a huge positive impact on her, and he was kind of a father figure for the girl.

“Through all the bad situations, I would just picture him saying that he was here for us and that if we ever need him, he would be right there. He would always protect us, and so those words would come to me during the worst times of my childhood life,” Klynn said to FOX4 News.

The police officer made the little girl a pinky-promise back in the day – to check up on her, every single day, as long as she lived in Kansas City. This went on for months and months, but one day, Klynn didn’t respond when the officer rang the bell.

Colvin was very worried because it was very unlike her, and had enough reason to go inside the home to see what was going on.

He saw the little girl almost unconscious on the floor, completely weak, sick, and looking pale. Officer Colvin then rushed her to the hospital and saved her life – her scary medical condition was due to malnutrition.

All these years later, Officer Colvin is now actually Staff Sergeant Colvin.

One day, their heartfelt and emotional reunion finally took place.

Klynn never forgot this special moment. If it weren’t for the pinky promise and the daily checkups, Klynn wouldn’t be alive today. Unfortunately, the girl later moved out of the state, and the two had no way of keeping in touch with each other.

Despite the logistical issues, Klynn was determined to meet her hero once again.

She asked the Kansas City Police Department for help, and before she knew it, she was reunited with her childhood hero.

Klynn actually thought that the man would have forgotten about her – after all, it’s been so long and there are a lot of things you go through as a police officer, but the man always remembered her.

“I had actually thought about her and wondered whatever happened with her … Most times we go through our career not realizing we truly helped anybody out,” Sergeant Colvin added.

Aside from thanking him, she wanted to ask the man one more favor.

Because of her fond memories of Colvin, Klynn actually decided to become a police officer herself in his honor. She was actually already finishing up at the Academy and was about to graduate.

Her request? She wanted Sergeant Colvin to attend her ceremony, and be the one who would pin her badge.

He changed her life around for the better, and she wanted to make him proud.

“I was very proud of her. She really beat all statistical odds to get where she was … Most people would look at her 9-year-old self and basically write her off and say this girl doesn’t have a chance in the world. She’s not going to amount to anything. She obviously proved everybody wrong there,” Colvin said to ABC 13.

Klynn also brought a small gift for the man. She made him a custom plaque in his honor with the following text:

“A promise made, a promise kept, walking in the footsteps of a true hero!”

What an absolutely amazing story and two incredible people!
