Arriving at a shelter and adapting to the shelter life- it’s not always an easy task for poor four-footers who are brought in. While this can happen without many issues, a lot of dogs are noticeably withdrawn or even fearful when they first enter the shelter.
For the 18-year-old dachshund who listens to the name Muneca, it didn’t really matter where she lived – she just wanted to get a little bit of attention.
Muneca first arrived at the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center in Los Angeles after her owner decided to get rid of her.
The poor dog’s life changed completely as she knew it. Not only did she lose her owner, but she also had no place to call home anymore.
Because of her old age, she also recently lost her eyesight and is completely blind.
Things definitely weren’t going well for Muneca, as she was timid and scared. Despite her reservedness, the poor senior dog still wanted to make a meaningful connection with humans- she wanted to feel loved.
All she ever wanted since she arrived at the shelter, was to be held by someone. It was something Muneca could feel, and she was only really comfortable whenever she knew a person was taking care of her and showing her some love.
Luckily, a lot of volunteers at the Baldwin Park shelter were more than willing to show this adorable dachshund some love.
Elaine Seamans has been volunteering at the Los Angeles animal shelter for a long time, and she immediately felt a connection with Muneca. That special bond was likewise for Muneca because she seemingly decided that Elaine was her new favorite person.
As soon as she got close enough and petted her, Muneca jumped straight into the kind woman’s arms.
The adorable pooch held her very tightly, treating Elaine’s arms as the only safe space around. It was such a heartfelt, special, and touching moment, and definitely a moment that Elaine will never forget.
At the time, a photographer was visiting the shelter by pure coincidence. He decided to check out some of the workings of the shelter and was able to capture this incredible moment in beautiful photos.
“When I got to the shelter, Elaine was already holding the dog,” photographer John Hwang said to The Dodo. “The dog was clinging on to her.”
“Elaine is so amazing with the dogs. She’ll roll on the ground with the shelter dogs. She’ll kiss them. She really has a special chemistry with them. I love capturing that.”
The photographer thought this special relationship was so beautiful, and he was even honored that he was able to capture their chemistry for everyone to see.
“Ultimately, the person who sees the photo – I want them to feel something. I want them to feel a connection,” he concluded. “If I can capture the right sort of connect, then the person who sees the image will feel it too.”
Muneca stayed at the shelter for a little while until he got a full medical check-up, and spent some time with foster families thereafter.
Now, Muneca has been adopted by a loving family!
This adorable dog finally has a loving forever home again, with an endless supply of hugs and cuddles.
