If there’s one thing that a lot of pet owners don’t fully seem to realize, it’s that owning a pet is actually a lifelong commitment. After all, if you’ve decided to bring a four-footer into your life, it also means that you have to take care of them. Seems simple enough to grasp, but there are still countless animals out there who have to face neglect, abuse, or worse by their owners.
When you see stories like these, it’s pretty easy to see that some people clearly can’t handle the responsibility of owning a pet at all.
Apparently, raising this adorable German Shepherd turned out to be a lot of work- too much to handle for the owner. Instead of calling the shelter, or looking for another home with friends or family, these owners decided to do something drastic.
The dog’s previous owners took a drive to the middle of nowhere, and simply ditched the German Shepherd along with his kennel.
Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of specific details about the history of this abandoned German Shepherd, even though he was microchipped and also had a collar on him.
Suffice it to say, leaving this poor dog out on the side of the road is extremely careless. If the dog got scared, he could’ve easily gotten lost in the woods, or worse, ended up underneath a car.
Luckily, a driver decided to stop and check out the crate when he spotted it.
The man from Louisiana, Richard Jordan, saw the crate while he was driving, and figured that he needed to stop and check it out, just in case. When he got out of his car and got closer, he spotted a timid and scared German Shepherd who was anxiously waiting in his crate until his owners returned to get him.
It was clear that this poor pooch wasn’t doing well, he felt completely helpless and had no idea what to do.
When you see a stray dog, especially one that can be very intimidating, such as a German Shepherd, it’s a good idea to approach them very carefully. Sometimes, it’s better to just call for back-up right away. Dogs that were previously abused by humans sometimes believe that all humans are bad and will act aggressively.
Richard knew this, and he approached the crate with caution and very slowly. Luckily, this pooch didn’t appear to be aggressive towards him, but he was definitely timid, skittish, and scared. The man wanted to help out this abandoned dog, so he didn’t give up just yet.
After he called the local animal services, Richard tried to gain the Shepherd’s trust.
It actually didn’t take too long until he was able to get quite close to the dog, who was absolutely beautiful, according to him.
It was also then that Richard saw that he was wearing a collar, which revealed his name: Borel.
The man was actually a bit confused because the dog seemed very well-cared for, making him wonder why they’d even think about abandoning him.
After animal services took the dog in, Richard posted a heartfelt note on a local Facebook group about the dog. He suspects that Borel was actually the victim of ‘fad breeding’. Fad breeding occurs when people desperately want a specific breed of dog, but then end up regretting their choice, or realizing owning one of them is actually too much work.
“It was well known these dogs are too much for the average person,” Richard wrote. “Well, this scared dog in the woods today … fell victim to this. This is the end result of fad buying,” he posted.
A couple of days later, the microchip actually revealed that Borel once belonged to a breeder from Dallas. Nobody has a clue how and why he ended up abandoned at the side of the road.
Luckily, Borel’s future was already starting to look a lot brighter.
A lot of people have expressed interest in adopting the beautiful and sweet German Shephard, so he can finally find his loving forever home.
