Some creatures are trained as predators when they are young. Some are trained as friends when they are young. The world is different for each species of animal that exists today.
Polar bears are predators from birth, and they kill many animals- even though they look extremely cute and cuddly.
A polar bear lives in the Arctic, as do seals. They often hunt them and use the ice as a platform. The problem is that seals can go thirty minutes without needing to come up for air!
Polar bears are instructed by their parents on how to catch their food so that they can survive. Patience is key, and younger polar bears often struggle, due to their short attention spans. But eventually, over time, they learn the art of snagging a seal.
BBC caught the momma polar bear’s attempt to teach her cubs how to catch a seal.
But what happened absolutely blew the cubs away. The video was titled “Polar bear cub gets surprised by seal” and was posted on their YouTube channel. It has since racked up more than 9.5 million views.
To start the video, the momma bear and the cubs wait next to a hole in the ice where they think a cub will emerge. The polar bear is guessing that one arrives soon, but the cubs aren’t used to the process, and they begin to wander off and do their own things.
The momma pays them no attention, and keeps her eyes and focus on the hole in the ice.
The female cub gets next to the momma and prepares for a nap.
Meanwhile, the male cub decides to have some fun and nudges around a snowball that he has created.
The small cub’s antics lead him away from his mom and sister and close to a different hole.
He sits and plays with his snowball, and then gets hit with the biggest surprise.
Instead of coming out a hole where the mother is waiting, the seal pops out right in front of the hole, scaring him completely.
The poor little polar bear cub is completely taken off-guard and he falls backward while the seal just looks at him. We don’t think that this cub has figured out all of the ins and outs of getting his dinner. And you know what? That’s perfectly okay!
In one of the sweetest moments ever, the seal is spared from being dinner, as the two share a cute moment.
Many people addressed just how much they loved the video in the comment section on YouTube, one person said:
“I like how the seal realizes it’s a baby just sits there for a minute and looks . If that was mama he would not have done that.”
Another viewer commented:
“I’d be surprised too if dinner popped up from the floor in front of me.”
At the end of the day, this seal got off lucky, thankfully so, too. It was a hilarious moment that made us laugh, and we hope it makes you laugh too!
It’s not every day you see an adorable polar bear cub playing with his “food”, but it’s absolutely heartwarming when you do!
