At 13 years old, Luke Thill was already able to plan and build his own tiny home.
In the past few years, the trend of tiny houses, minimalism, and home improvement have been everywhere. Unlike before, where people are all about bigger homes and appliances, today, the trend is all about living simply.
To live in a home that is just right for you and your needs and to put furniture and appliances that you only use is the goal here. Less clutter, right?
If you are one of those people who now appreciate minimalism and tiny homes, then you’d feel proud of this young man.
While other kids his age would save up for a new phone or new toys, Luke was saving for a house. He was able to raise $1,500 on his own by offering help to his friendly neighbors.
He’d offer to help them with their chores like mowing lawns and cleaning their garage. He was really serious with his goals, and for his age, this was already something to be proud of.
“I was just on YouTube looking around and came across a tiny house idea and then that spiraled into looking at almost every YouTube video there is, it felt like, I got obsessed with them and decided to build my own,” Luke told ABC News.
Luke was already decided about his plans.
His parents and neighbors were also very supportive of him. They were willing to give him small chores so he can save up, and his parents also did their best to give advice to their son.
Andie and Greg Thill knew that their son, Luke, was serious about his project. That’s why they didn’t have second thoughts about helping and supporting him.
Any parent would love to see their child be like Luke. No gadgets, games, or toys, he was planning to build something useful!
“We said, ‘If you’re that serious we have to set some ground rules,’” Greg Thill, told ABC News.
Other than that, some of the materials that Luke used in building his dream house were salvaged pieces.
It was a huge project for such a young boy, but as they say, if you really want it bad enough, then you can make it possible.
Luke’s tiny house project began in June of 2016.
Everyone was so excited about his project that they all offered their help. His father helped Luke with the construction, assisting him on the tasks that still needed supervision for, while his mother helped him with the furnishings. Luke’s siblings also offered their help.
It’s different when you are the one who’s doing the work, from saving the money needed for the materials to doing the construction.
You just learn how to value everything.
When it was all finished, Luke and his family threw a simple grand opening!
They invited all those people who helped Luke in making his dream into a reality.
Luke’s tiny home is just 89 sq/ft, but when you go inside, you’ll see just how cozy it is. It’s perfect for a young boy like him. It has all the necessities, such as a seating area, a folding table, a mini ref, a heater, and a bed in his sleeping loft.
