Everyone has a unique talent, but there are strange things that some people can do with their bodies that most people can’t. We often try these “unique abilities” back when we’re still young and curious about almost everything that we see.
We have rounded up a list of surprising things that most people can’t do. Although these may look pretty simple, it’s still fascinating to see how they come up with these strange talents.
Check out the list below and see if you can try any of it in your spare time!
1. RAISE ONE EYEBROW
If you think raising one eyebrow is an easy feat – think again. Animating your face by raising one eyebrow can mean a lot of things, such as expressing annoyance or surprise.
It doesn’t come naturally to everyone; in fact, according to research, only one muscle controls both eye movements. It’s believed that people who can easily pull this off have one side of their muscle disconnected.
2. BEND YOUR THUMB BACKWARD
Also known as Hitchhiker’s thumb, this ability is hyperextensibility of your thumb which means that it’s hypermobile or very flexible. Your thumb’s bendability is controlled by its distal interphalangeal joint, and when you’re one of the few that has been passed down the “Bendy thumb gene”, then you can easily bend your thumb as far as 90 degrees.
3. TOUCH YOUR TONGUE TO YOUR NOSE
You’re pretty unique if you can do this trick easily. The ability to touch your nose using your tongue can only be performed by around 10% of the general population since it depends on your genes.
This rare capability is called Gorlin’s sign which means that you have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome or EDS. This disorder affects your joints when it has too much flexibility.
4. RAISING ONLY YOUR RING FINGER
Try this out first. Put down your hand on a flat surface with the middle finger bent inside the palm. Then, try raising your thumb, index, and pinky finger – no problem right? This time try raising your ring finger if you can. Bet that you couldn’t do it right?
The explanation for this is quite simple, the tendons around your hand are connected, except the middle and the ring finger. It’s the reason why it’s impossible to raise your ring finger without the middle finger.
5. WIGGLE YOUR EARS
Have you ever seen wiggle their ears? Ear movement is pretty common in many mammals, but with humans, it’s actually quite rare. Only 10 to 20% of the general population can do this trick but you can teach yourself how to wiggle your ears by concentrating on moving your ears without making your eyes go up and down.
6. FOLD YOUR TONGUE IN HALF
Tongue twisting is compromised of rolling, folding, turning, and rotating of the tongue, thanks to the influence of a dominant allele of the gene. When you’re born with either one or two copies of the dominant allele then you can easily do this ability. However, if you have two recessive alleles then it’s impossible for you to do this task.
7. SNEEZE WITH YOUR EYES OPEN
Ever been curious as to why you always close your eyes when you sneeze? While it’s absolutely possible to open your eyes while doing so, most of us have an involuntary reflex to avoid microbes from getting into your eyes.
8. PERFECT PITCH
Otherwise known as “Absolute Pitch”, this skill is not exclusively musical but is extremely rare with only about one in 10,000 people having it. It is when you can sing or play any note on the spot, with no former guiding note. However, anyone can acquire this ability as long as they have tons of practice.
9. TOUCH YOUR ELBOW WITH YOUR TONGUE
We’re not entirely sure why people try and do this, but it does seem fun. Not a lot of people can do this, but if you have a smaller forearm and long tongue you have a greater chance of pulling this off. Still, you need to have good flexibility.
10. MOVING YOUR HANDS AND FEET IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION
Do you think you’re good at multi-tasking? Try this: Sit on a chair and turn your right legs clockwise. At the same time, draw an 8 shape with your right hand. How did your leg do? Did it change its direction? The result is the same in most people since we’re basically using two different sides of the brain. You can still practice this but note that it’s incredibly hard.
