Even though humans are social animals, about 25-40% of us are less inclined to be social for long periods of time.
And there’s nothing wrong with that! It just means we fit a personality type known as introversion, which is a superpower if you really think about it.
Here are the 10 signs that you’re an introvert (like me) and maybe don’t know it.
1. You’re happier when you’re alone.
If “I may be alone, but I’m not lonely” resonates with you, you’re likely an introvert.
Being by ourselves is the opposite of being lonely because we actually enjoy our own company.
We don’t need external stimuli to be happy.
In fact, it probably annoys you to no end when someone tells you that you should get out more.
Grrr!
2. You put a hard stop on People Time.
If you’re an introvert, you probably have a time limit on how much you are willing to spend in the company of others.
It has nothing to do with how much we love our peeps.
It’s just that after a certain point, we retreat to do our own thing.
Just like when you’re done with a meal, you simply get up and walk away.
3. Being in crowds sucks the life out of you.
Yes, it’s a real thing!
According to WebMD, introversion is linked to how we react to dopamine.
“Introverts and extroverts have the same amount of the chemical, but extrovert brains get an excited buzz from their reward center. Introverts, on the other hand, tend to just feel run-down by it.”
4. You need a hard reset after social interactions.
Socializing can be fun, but it can also be physically, mentally, and emotionally draining to spend an inordinate amount of time socializing with others.
Doing a hard reset, like when you burrito yourself in a comfy blanket, instantly re-energizes your battery and makes you feel more zen and happy.
5. You’re having more fun living “in your head.”
Introverts are highly imaginative creatures, and we could spend eons daydreaming about all the fantastical places and stories we create.
Sometimes, it may even seem like the world “out there” is the fake one because the one in our head feels so much better.
6. You think small talk is stupid talk.
I mean, why even bother?
It’s a waste of our precious time when we could be doing so many other more important things.
Small talk just extends the amount of time that we have to converse with people.
Besides, we tend to have much more meaningful conversations with our doggy, kitty, or lifelong bestie.
7. You find hectic environments super stressful.
Parties, sporting events, and even shopping at the grocery store on a busy Saturday afternoon can feel very stressful.
All that zippy energy from the constant activity and chaos is just too maddening!
Once we’re back home in our safe place, everything calms down quite beautifully.
8. You seek quality over quantity in friendships and relationships.
We tend to prefer small groups of close friends rather than playing the popular numbers game.
Plus, since they already know us, our friends don’t get offended when we ignore them.
9. You take some time out to make decisions.
Quiet solitude is a great time for us to process information and make important decisions.
When there’s a flurry of activity around us, it impedes our ability to focus and concentrate.
10. You pick up on things other people miss.
Because we spend lots of time in introspection, it’s easier for us to slow down and observe what’s going on around us.
This means we can pick apart all the BS floating around out there without even trying.
