Once a woman turns 50, impulse buying no longer works. There’s too much stuff in the house and even though you tell yourself you’ll use it, you won’t. By the time a woman turns 50, it’s time to be more mindful and more deliberate. There are things that you really have no reason to buy.
Fast fashion
Fast fashion pieces are one of the things that must be sacrificed after 50. There’s no place in a woman’s closet for items that will fall apart after a few washes. Fast fashion doesn’t always fit right as well. It’s better to spend a little more on high-quality clothes that fit, flatter your figure, and last a long time than save a little on clothes that only clothe you for awhile.
What are the other things that women (even men) don’t need to buy after 50? Click that button to continue reading!
Clothes that need to be ironed
Who here doesn’t like but has to iron their clothes? Yes, freshly-ironed clothes look really good but when you have to spend almost half the day just ironing clothes, does it really seem worth it?
There are so many non-iron and wrinkle-free clothes that are available nowadays anyway. Invest in those types of clothes so you can free up your time doing something more productive.
Clothes you don’t feel good in
Gone are the days when we want to impress other people with our clothes. Gone are the days when we let the sales attendant “convince” us to buy the clothes because we look so “cute in them.”
Shop the Marie Kondo way. Does it spark joy? Do you feel good wearing it? If you said yes, then get it. If you said no, then put it back.
Clothes that don’t fit properly
When you were younger, did you ever buy clothes that were a size smaller because you promised you’d lose the weight to wear them? You’d use the clothes as motivation but you never did lose the weight. Now, the clothes are just hanging in your closet judging you?
Nobody needs that in their life. Buy clothes for the body you have now. When you lose weight, then buy clothes for the body you’ll have then. For now, live in the present body.
Buying all clothes from the same store
It’s very convenient to buy all your clothes from one store. You already know how it’s going to fit and look on you. It’s just a very reliable and dependable option. What will you do though when the store unexpectedly closes? It’s okay.
Don’t worry, there are other stores you can go to. You just have to look for them. Yes, them. Look for two or more shops to buy from so that you can have more options. Remember, clothes shopping is like investments. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.
High heels
Wearing high heels has never been about comfort. High heels have always been about style and looking good. When you turn 50, looking good is no longer a priority because comfort tops that list.
Wearing high heels is never comfortable so stop wearing them if you don’t want to. You might just end up hurting yourself. It’s not worth it.
Just because your friend has it
When you were younger, this was probably called FOMO or Fear of Missing Out. The call is stronger especially when your sister, friend, or someone close to you bought it and wants you to buy it, too.
You’re pressured to buy it even though you don’t want it because someone close to you influenced you. Those days are over. Buy it only if you want it. If you don’t like it, don’t get it. That’s called JOMO, or the Joy of Missing Out.
Things that don’t go with your personality
Do you know yourself? What is your personality? Do your clothes reflect who you are? Being a mature woman over 50, there is no longer any need to impress because you know who you are and you’re confident about it.
Wear clothes that show that confidence and your true self.
Multiples of the same item
Raise your hand if you buy an item you like in different colors. Yes, a lot of us are guilty of that. It’s just so convenient. When you think about it though, do you really need all of those?
Sometimes, we even buy multiple items of one item in the same color. That just creates so much clutter. Just buy one next time.
Things you have to talk yourself into buying
A lot of people feel pressured to buy certain clothes because they believe it’s what people their age should wear. Stop. That’s not true. If your inner voice tells you that piece of clothing doesn’t look good on you, listen to it. It’s almost always right.
Don’t online shop when stressed
When you’re feeling stressed or emotional, stop window shopping even online! The next thing you know, you’ve added so many things to your cart and your credit card bill is a little bit higher the next month. To make things worse, the clothes you bought are clothes you don’t usually wear but they just caught your eye and made you feel good.
Next time you’re feeling stressed, look for another way to destress. Knit, bake, work out, meditate, draw, or pray. Do something else that’s more productive. It’s better for your mental health and your wallet.
Unsubscribe from store emails
Can you remember all the mailing lists you signed up for? Can you even remember what that store sold? If you don’t, then feel free to unsubscribe.
Subscribe only to shops that you frequent. Plus if you’re not looking to buy, you can delete their email without looking at it. Free up your email!
A lot of makeup
Sometimes we buy more make-up than usual because we believe we might need the options. Most of the time, we don’t and they just go to waste. Next time, just buy what you like and what you need.
Paying full price
If you want to save money, wait for sales. You don’t need to keep paying the full price for the things you buy. When you’re ready to buy, check out the store’s website if there is a current ongoing sale.
Sign up for their loyalty rewards card or membership as well. This will help you earn points that you can use to buy in the future or they give you free items or samples whenever you buy.
Invest in good hangers
Do you keep the hangers that you get for free from the dry cleaners or the plastic ones from the store? Ditch them or return them to the stores. Invest in good hangers and your clothes will last longer.
Good hangers will help keep the original shape of your clothes plus the cheap hangers can snag your clothes and ruin them.
Small kitchen appliances
Who is addicted to watching infomercials? The actors in infomercials should be paid big because they’re so convincing. They always convince us to buy these small appliances that we end up using once or twice.
Now they take up too much space in our counters or pantry. It’s better to buy more durable versions of these kitchen appliances that will guarantee to last a long time.
Magazine subscriptions
Magazine subscriptions don’t make sense anymore, especially when you can read the articles for free online. They’ll just take up too much space in your home plus you’ll need to worry about disposing of them. Stop subscribing and buying magazines and just read them online.
Cookbooks
Cookbooks are like magazines. There are so many free recipes online now and there’s not much need for cookbooks.
The only cookbooks you’ll probably need are the ones that are very specific (maybe a very specific diet) or one that you use regularly.
Subscription boxes
Subscription boxes are fun to get. It’s always fun to unbox them because you never know what you’re going to get. It’s fun for a few minutes. Then you go back to your real world.
The truth is, most of the items in the boxes are not life-changing and even if they are, it’s usually just one or two products. You never get those every month though. Stop buying subscription boxes and just buy what you need.
