For so long, plus-size women have resorted to wearing oversized clothes to hide their big arms, big shoulders, or big belly. We’re so glad that in the past couple of years, more and more plus-sized women are coming out with so much confidence to celebrate themselves.
So many plus-sized women want to embrace that confidence as well when they go out into the world but they’re not sure how to do it.
Parmita and Olga want to share with you tips on how to dress for your body type and exude that confidence. To start with:
Define your waist
For example, one of the tips they shared was to define your waist. Defining your waist gives the illusion that you have perfect hourglass curves in the right places. For the petite plus-sized ladies, defining a high waist will also make you look taller than you really are. Go for structured bottoms and a loose top and then add a belt on your waist. Done.

Make shapewear your friend
Clothes that are either too big or too small will do nothing for your figure. Always buy clothes that are true to your size. Olga also said, no, she emphasized that we need to stop buying the clothes that we’ll wear when we lose weight.
It’s not going to happen. Buy the clothes that you can wear now.
Choose the right undergarment
Get yourself fitted for the right undergarments. You’re going to have to wear these undergarments every day for years. Do you want to be comfortable? We know. It’s embarrassing sometimes and makes us so vulnerable to show our bodies to other people for the fitting. But you know what? These people have seen everything.
They have no time and no energy to judge because they don’t see it anymore. They’ve seen it all. And they’re professionals. What they want is for you to find the right product that fits you well and will accentuate your perfection and hide your flaws.
Avoid rounded shoes
Petite ladies, listen to this. Rounded shoes make your legs look shorter and stumpier. Yes, they do nothing for your figure. It’ll just highlight your flaws.
This is especially true if you’re wearing jeans, particularly skinny jeans. Wearing flats or flip flops or rounded shoes will emphasize the width of your legs.
Wear pointed toe shoes
So ditch the rounded shoes and go for pointed-toe shoes instead. They elongate the legs and make you look taller. This is a great tip for petite plus-size ladies who have great legs and want to show them off.
There’s no need to wear high heels. As long as the front area is pointy, you’re good to go.
Dress in one color (except white)
Except for white, it’s a good idea to dress all in one color. This is highly recommended for plus-size women who have boxy figures because it elongates the body. It also gives the illusion of an hourglass figure. When you dress with separate pieces in different colors, it actually highlights the area where the two colors meet.
That’s usually the waist area, which you don’t really want to highlight too much. So go for it, dress in one color from head to toe.
Coverup with long outerwear
Do you live in a colder place? Or maybe you don’t but you’re going somewhere with colder temperatures than the outside world. Use long outerwear. You can wear a long cardigan or a long coat.
Then pair it with pants or skinny jeans and pointy-toe shoes, wow!
Don’t wear broad, horizontal stripes
We’ve always been told, to wear vertical stripes to look thinner and longer. That’s now an outdated tip. The trick is not to wear a particular direction of stripes but the size of the stripes. Wearing clothes with thick, vertical stripes will make you stockier than usual.
But when you wear clothes with thin, horizontal stripes, it’ll make you more slender. You can wear horizontal stripes now. Just make sure they’re thin, horizontal stripes.
Accentuate your waist
Now that we’ve established the rule about stripes, here’s another one. Avoid wearing separate pieces with lots of stripes. If it’s one dress, then go wear it. But if you’re wearing a striped top and striped bottoms, don’t do it!
It won’t be good for your waist. Instead, go for a plain top and striped bottoms. Best to dress in dark colors, too. This will accentuate your waist.
Avoid pleated skirts
They may be the trend, but unfortunately, pleated skirts are not recommended for plus-size ladies. They add bulk to your frame, especially around the belt area. The pleats may look very cute when you open them up and twirl around but they won’t be the focal point of your outfit.
It’ll be the waist area where so much bulk has been added.
Wear high-waisted jeans
If you want to keep other people’s eyes away from your waist, your thighs, or your muffin top, wear high-waisted jeans. And make sure they’re dark-colored jeans for a more dramatic and elongating effect.
Pair pointy-toed shoes with high waist
Wear high-waisted jeans that end just above your pointy-toed shoes. Oh, and add a little bit of heel to your shoes, as well. Like Parmita said, pointy-toed shoes will make your legs look longer.
Add even an inch of heel because flats, even if they’re pointy, can make your legs look stocky.
Avoid light-colored jeans and pants
If you have bigger thighs, wear dark colors since these colors have a slimming effect. When you wear light-colored bottoms paired with big thighs, it’ll make your thighs look even bigger. We don’t want that.
We want leaner looking legs so go for darks.
Wear V-neck tops
Do you have big breasts? Wear V-neck tops. They do two things. One, elongate the body. And two, they strike a balance between hips and thighs. V-neck tops are great for plus-sized women with great-looking necks since it really highlights the neckline.
If you don’t have big breasts but want the look V-neck tops give, wear a push-up bra. Make sure to get fitted for the bra so it’s the right size.
Wear long necklaces
Would you believe accessories help draw the eyes away from the body part you want to hide? And depending on the accessory, it can highlight your best features.
Take long necklaces, they can take the attention away from big hips and keep the attention on your neck.
Wear big earrings
How about earrings? Well, they take the attention away from your upper body if you want to hide it. Or maybe you want to highlight your face or your eyes.
Go for big earrings that complement them.
Wear big bracelets and rings
Big bracelets hide your big arms by drawing attention to your wrists. Make sure to wear statement bracelets that show off your personality.
Wear thin belts
Think belts are also a great accessory. Make sure they’re thin belts because if you wear thick belts, those will cut your torso in half.
You just want a thin enough belt that will help define your waist.
Determine where the widest part of your body is
Or if your shoulders are the widest part, then you’ll match the hips’ width with it.
When you do that, your clothes will be in proportion to your body and your clothes will fit you better.
Plus you’ll look smaller overall.
Avoid clothing that has no shape
One of the techniques women usually do to hide their “flaws” is to just hide their bodies. Women dress in loose and maxi dresses and lose any type of shape.
This style of dressing up actually makes you look bigger than you actually look.
Wear a jumpsuit that defines the waist
A jumpsuit won’t just help you create that hourglass shape but it encourages you to “embrace the waist.” There are other things that are going great for this jumpsuit, too. The V-neck and lines in the middle that go down help elongate the body.
The volume and more space on the top and bottom make it more comfortable for you to wear the jumpsuit and embrace the waist. It perfectly creates that voluptuous hourglass body you’re creating.
Wear a blazer to create contrast
Adding a structured or tailored blazer with a loose shirt and pants will add the bulk you need for that hourglass shape. Swapping your sneakers with ankle boots can elevate this look from casual to chic.
And you know what else will transform your look? Ruched sleeves. Perfect.
Add a scarf with coordinating colors
Do you see what happened when they added a long, contrasting scarf down the center of her body? It elongated her body. Now the eyes are drawn to the length of the body, instead of the width.
It also helps to draw attention to the legs and boots, which are the highlights of this outfit. Plus the contrasting scarf also highlighted the different colors of her outfit.
Lengthen leg by tucking in shirt
Another way to lengthen the legs is to tuck in your shirt. When you tuck in your shirt, it automatically lengthens your pants. And if you add a long blazer, coat, or jacket, it’ll hide your tummy and add more length.
Wear boots to top off the look.
Wear a V-neck shirt
When you wear a V-neck shirt, it elongates your silhouette. Plus it gives you more breathing space on the top.
And when you want to feel more feminine, accessorize with a simple necklace that complements your whole look.
Don’t pull down your shirt to cover your entire backside
If you cover the entire backside, it automatically draws the eyes toward it. You’re basically saying “Hey everyone, look notice my backside.”
Keep eyes away from your wide backside by NOT covering everything with your shirt.
Tuck undershirt at halfway area of the bottom
Instead, just pull down the back of your shirt to cover the top half of your backside. This makes your hips and backside smaller than it looks.
Placing your shirt on the halfway area will make you look like you have a voluptuous backside with long legs.
Don’t tuck the shirt above your bottom
If you place it higher and on top of your backside, it makes your backside look bigger. Halfway will make your backside and waist look smaller.
So look for that right balance between the top of the pants or jeans and the bottom of your backside.
Choose a dress that creates shape and length
The top part matches the width of the hips below to create that hourglass shape. There is a belt on her waist to give her shape. Plus you have a v-neck plus a separation in the center.
Since there’s an opening in the center, it elongated her body and made it look smaller, too.
Add an undershirt to create proportion
If you’re wearing a sweater that’s almost the same color as your pants, it’s always best to have a lighter undershirt. Because we’re looking for an hourglass shape, having that undershirt will create good body proportions.
When you don’t have an undershirt, it’s going to make your backside stick out and look bigger in the process.
But don’t pull your undershirt down too far
Be careful that you don’t pull your undershirt too far down. It will make your hips and backside look wider and bigger.
And there’s just no proper body proportion.
Wear a V-neck dress
If you don’t have time to match your bottom with your top, try wearing a V-neck dress. Choose one that has an empire waistline so that it fans out before the hips and still creates that hourglass shape.
If you’re wearing a V-neck button-down dress, one thing you can do to avoid having a tight top or showing too much cleavage is to pin it. Secure the neckline with a pin at the middle of the top and bottom buttons.
Wear a slightly flared ankle length trouser
If you’re conscious of your wide feet, you can wear ankle-length trousers with a slight flare. The flare will match your wide hips and actually make your feet look smaller. It’s true! The ankle-length trousers work the same way as the tucked-in shirt technique.
The ends are not too high that it makes your foot look bigger and your legs shorter. They’re not too long that it just eats up your foot and make you look frumpy.
Wear a blazer to create an hourglass shape
Always wear a tailored blazer if you want to make sure that you have that hourglass shape. The seam is on top of the shoulders and creates that angle that makes you look slimmer.
Because it’s tailored, the blazer slims down by the waist and tapers off again by the hips. It creates the slimmer shape you want.
Wear a bright dress with confidence
Curvy bodies do not have to shy away from bright dresses. It’s all about confidence, baby! And when you wear a bright statement dress, the eyes are all on the dress and the confidence.
Eyes are not looking at the body shape at all. So when you wear a bright dress, wear it with so much confidence!
Wear mom jeans
Mom jeans are great because they fit well but they still give you the legroom to move around. And of course, keep it to ankle length, pair it with a tailored blazer, a tucked-in shirt, or an undershirt and you’re good to go.
Rock those mom jeans!
Wear a stylish jumpsuit with a belt and accessories
Curvy bodies do not need to shy away from jumpsuits. It’s all about accessories. Wear a belt to emphasize your waist and curves. Wear a V-neck to elongate your silhouette.
Wear a necklace and bracelet that complements your clothes so your entire outfit is cohesive.
