Oh wait, WE DO.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) might have a lot of rules – and they might seem like a drag sometimes – but they’re largely there to prevent boneheaded moves like the ones you see here.
These 50 people either participated in or recorded some seriously dangerous stunts that should definitely not be tried at work or at home.
1. A bad lesson to learn the hard way
Whose idea was this?!
2. Oh, ok
Nothing says “I value my life” more than trying to get an elevator to budge by using your body weight to force it to move.
We’ll take the stairs.
Final Destination from r/OSHA
3. What could possibly go wrong?
And do you think you’d want your hands or feet on them if you touch the wrong wire and your buddies are standing in a puddle?
Probably not.
4. Bad signage
The real problem is that it’s marked as an emergency exit, which is most certainly is not.
At least not if you can’t run through concrete walls.
Emergency “exit” in a friend’s office building. First time they opened it was DURING A FIRE ALARM from r/OSHA
5. Boys and their poop jokes
They would be one rule we’d be happy to skip.
6. Is there a way to toss this into the sun?
Sharps are stored in special bags specifically so that this does not happen.
No one wants to risk death while collecting trash.
Sharps container? These people apparently never heard of one…the needles were poking out of the box. from r/OSHA
7. A bad place for an emergency
Never make a sign that would make a lawyer smile.
I’ll do my best from r/OSHA
8. Entrance of death
At least you don’t have to walk across rusty metal spikes to get to work.
Maybe it feels like that emotionally, but the physical ramifications are much more serious here.
9. Signage
Why leave a sharp piece of anything exposed? And how are so many people walking so close to a pillar that they scrape themselves?
We can’t imagine they’re any more likely to notice the signs in this case.
We had 5-6 people scrape/cut themselves walking past this exposed thermostat, so we finally complained… came in this morning to this solution. from r/OSHA
10. That’s it, we quit
Frankly, it’s not an on-the-job risk we’ve ever thought about.
Do you get to go home after there’s been a bear sighting on the premises?
11. It’s not orange enough
We can’t tell his vest is orange and, frankly, we kind of feel like there could be some warning that a person could pop out of the middle of the highway.
Is that asking too much?
Found this guy digging in a manhole on busy 4 lane road. No cones, no truck, just an orange vest. from r/OSHA
12. Toasty
Can you imagine being a worksite manager and walking in to see this in action?
We’d flip out.
13. Keeping it clean
Ah yes, our favorite new item faux pas – except this is the deadliest version.
How many times have you seen someone keep the protective cover on something to “keep it shiny” and then complain that somehow it doesn’t work properly?
Thankfully, this is the only time we’ve seen someone unwise enough to do it with a smoke detector.
The hotel I’m staying in is keeping the plastic covers on its fire alarms to keep them newer for longer from r/OSHA
14. Smoke break
Some people just take stupid ideas to the next level.
Actually, we can’t even give this credit for being an “idea.” It’s actually a complete lack of thinking.
Unless he enjoys explosions. We just prefer to see them from much farther away.
Ready for lift off from r/OSHA
15. Hot stunt
It’s not quite the equivalent of jumping rope with a lightsaber, but that’s the first thing that came to mind.
Is that glass or metal? And does it even matter if it’s that hot?
Apparently, everyone in the room is pretty confident that he’s going to keep his grip on that.
16. Glass half full?
If you’re the person who always sees the glass as half full, how do you feel about the glass when there’s a lightbulb in it?
To be honest, this is a glass we’d prefer to be ALL empty.
And how is the light still on if water managed to seep in?!
Kudos to the guy who found this for not wasting the moment: “Hey boss, how much water is supposed to be in this lightbulb?” from r/OSHA
17. The best translation
We can only assume that it translates into something much closer to “caution, slippery, may cause falls.”
But we should all keep in mind that when we do slip and fall, we should do it as carefully as possible.
Ya know, if you have a choice.
Don’t get too hurt from r/OSHA
18. Impact
After seeing this, we’ll be forever grateful that we don’t have a job that requires us to catch heavy bags with our heads.
Can you imagine how your neck and shoulders would feel after a day at work here?
Even with hard hats (and where are those?!), that’s a brutal job.
19. Don’t tell me what to do
We admire the slight sarcasm.
There’s nothing like taking the time to mock a sign meant for your safety.
At least when they cut the corner they didn’t slice any of the text.
Whatever you do.. from r/OSHA
20. Good luck!
That’s the worst escape route we’ve ever seen.
The combination of zero guardrails and gaps between the steps pretty much ensure a fall – even if you’re the only person using it!
You’d be safer just removing the stairs and sliding down the pole!
21. Never borrow anything from this coworker
Well, this is one way to make your coworkers afraid to grab anything off your desk.
We just don’t want to witness anyone learning the hard way.
We can’t imagine what it would be like to mix these things up!
22. Work-life balance
Take this one, for example.
Can you imagine if someone fell (since they’re not harnessed) and you deleted the photo?
23. Piercing
Too easy?
No one really wants a surprise stab in the head.
24. Jesus take the ladder
It’s just as easy to fall off this roof as any other – and it looks like this guy in a few moments away from finding out the hard way.
When I was doing construction I was apparently featured in a “safety fails” site on Pinterest. from r/OSHA
25. In case of emergency break extinguisher
In fact, who even puts that back for an inspector to find?!
Even the most uncaring manager certainly doesn’t want to be caught without an extinguisher in the workplace…right?
All these fire extinguisher posts, I figured I would share this one I found as an inspector. from r/OSHA
26. Trap door
But what’s with the guy CLOSING it back up AFTER someone falls in?
We’re sure there’s a story behind it that makes sense, but it almost looks like he just gave up and tried to hide the evidence.
27. Leaving a note
Then again, if you leave giant holes uncovered, chances are you’re not going to take a slip of paper seriously.
28. Compact
One slip, one false move, and SMASH.
A quick but terrible way to go.
29. May the odds be ever in your favor
But we really hope there’s a floor plan ready to be slipped in there nearby.
30. Fresh air
This guy is lucky that it’s just paint.
Although he probably doesn’t feel very lucky (and his lungs aren’t going to thank him).
31. Reach for the stars
There’s no doubt a correct way of doing this and plenty of safety equipment around. So this guy may have no one to blame but himself.
I’ve always worked in refineries where safety is usually top priority. Now that I’m working commercial I’m amazed at what I’ve seen. from r/OSHA
32. DIY door handle
Installing a door handle any time you need to get out is a real pain.
At least the instructions are kind of funny.
I’m panicking. from r/OSHA
33. Who needs eyes anyway?
Or, even worse, needing it and not being able to see this sign and using it anyway?!
Every option is the worst.
34. Ladder Jenga
Seriously, how do you expect someone to put their life on the line for any amount of money just to scrape paint?
Are these guys insured?
Quit my Job After I Got Asked to Climb this Ladder on a 6 in 12 Pitch Roof. $10/hr Scraping Paint is Not Worth a Broken Neck. from r/OSHA
35. Get ’em while they’re not
What it looks like is a death trap on the verge of explosion.
But no matter what the tank is filled with, this is a stupid idea at the very least.
This barbeque from r/OSHA
36. Rude awakening
But the question is do you wake up in time to remember where you decided to sleep AND get yourself out of these before the wheels start moving?
You’d better hope so.
37. No open-toed shoes
The rules really are there for our safety.
We’d recommend just wearing full shoes.
38. Hole cone
Seriously – why bother? Someone is still going to fall in the hole – now they’ll just fall on the cone.
Whether they get hurt more seriously as a result is just a matter of luck.
39. Do not approach
But after what we’ve seen in the rest of this slideshow, we’re just not sure.
But we hope.
40. If you can read this
Because finding out you shouldn’t use something after the fact is no fun.
41. The best warning
And no one needs to meet a polar bear desperate enough to come near humans.
Polar Bear area from r/OSHA
42. Cross the bridge when you come to it
It doesn’t appear to be attached in place. It doesn’t appear to be stable in any way.
There are no guardrails of any sort.
That’s a big fail.
43. Push the hidden button
But if it’s the shut-off button for a bunch of potentially dangerous equipment, then we feel like your business license should at least be called into question.
Emergency power shut off for a machine shop class with 25+ manual lathes, 5 manual mills, and 4 CNC mills is behind a bookshelf from r/OSHA
44. Not good for your health
In case anyone is truly wondering, this is all sorts of wrong and no one should ever balance on a ladder this way – especially in a place that is no doubt governed by many safety regulations.
45. Literal death trap
There’s nothing RIGHT about this picture. In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised if it was staged it’s so bad (or at least if it was taken in a building not being used).
We can hope, at least.
Eye wash station = filled with empty oil cans. First aid station = blocked entirely by tires. Bravo. from r/OSHA
46. That seems wrong
This isn’t the kind of “current” we’d be hoping for if we needed to power something up.
Maybe we should switch to hydroelectric plugs forout appliances.
47. Clear!
You’d better hope the adrenaline rush kicks in early for that emergency.
49. Oh, the irony!
Slipping while you put up a safety sign is probably pretty embarassing.
49. We’re gonna need another switch
How does this happen? Do you build an elevator and just decide “meh, let’s just keep the one switch”?
Because if that’s what you decide, we think someone might have turned off your brain switch.
50. Thanks for the warning, sir
This looks like the driver admitting to liability as well, so we’d be careful before acknowledging that you’re driving a potential deathmobile.
It’s hard to insure those.
Hopefully, it goes without saying that no one should try these things at home (or at work!)
