Clothing trends, like makeup trends keep changing with time. The styles you rocked in your youth would have you cringing now but you were so cool then!
Trends keep shifting, so this article will show popular makeup trends we followed but are now becoming outdated.
Dark lipstick
There was a time when people preferred dark lipsticks over natural colors like pink and red.
But nowadays, rosy and coral tones are replacing those dramatic and deep colors. Plus, you can wear them in both casual and formal settings.
If you like the bold dark look, you don’t really have to change it, but makeup trends are shifting towards a simple and natural look, so keep a natural lip color handy.
Smokey Eyes
The smokey eye makeup remained in popularity until the 2010s. Black eye shadow was the starting point, but various colors and glitter were soon added to the look.
The current trend is eye shadows with more colors and glitter. Technicolor lids are in, having women sporting a striking, individual look.
The downside of a smokey eye look is that it gives a very mature look which adds more years to your face.
Since trends are shifting to a simpler and more natural look, leave smokey eyes in the past.
Matte Makeup
There’s no need to be careful now when applying foundation and powder just to make sure all your pores are concealed.
A chalky masked appearance is usually left on the face when using matte makeup. That makes it obvious that you are wearing makeup.
Women nowadays prefer makeup-free, bare-skin looks.
They stick to a sheer layer of highlighter to make their skin looks radiant and more natural.
Spider Eyelashes
An unintended consequence of using mascara, RiRi has however, made spider lashes look fashionable.
Women love trying new hues near the eyes even if the current trend is for more natural looks.
Mascara with unusual hues, like royal purple, electric blue, and forest green, are fast becoming fashionable.
Overdrawn Lips
A simple way to achieve bigger lips is by using a lip pencil.
But nowadays, women want to appreciate their natural beauty more, so large lips are becoming less fashionable.
Glossy lips are the trend now since they are simple and can make the most mature looking lady look sweet and innocent.
Foxy Eye Makeup
A recent fad has slightly tilted eyes spread over social media, but others imitated it resulting in heavy criticism for the look.
This is why graphic eyeliners are trending.
Bright and bold hues like white, blue, and yellow will make a bold statement and help distinguish you from the crowd.
Contouring
Cosmetics experts will tell you how important contouring is for that perfect look.
People can be scared to show their skin without four layers of makeup but that needs to go.
No one is perfect, but your flaws can make you look even prettier.
Flaunt your mole and freckles and be confident minus the contouring.
Thin Eyebrows
Trimming eyebrows is not a Gen Z discovery. Eyebrows have been in many fashion trends, including removing them and redrawing them.
The past decades, trimming eyebrows into thin lines was the trend, and they did it through plucking, trimming, and even waxing.
None of them were painless.
People today like natural eyebrows, and the fuller the better.
If you have bushy brows and are going through painful salon treatments, then your misery ends here.
Flaunt your eyebrows!
White eyeliner
There are a handful of benefits when using a product like white eyeliner. White eyeliner can make your eyes look bigger since it opens up your waterline.
However, white eyeliner is falling out of style in 2023.
It’s easy to make mistakes with white eyeliner, especially on your upper lash line, under your lashes, under your eyebrows, and layered over regular black eyeliner.
So why bother with it?
This is a trend that is considered outdated nowadays.
The issue with white eyeliner is that though it promises to make your eyes look bigger, your eyes can look creepier and that’s not a good thing.
Too much highlighter
So many women wore loads of highlighter on their chins, noses, cheekbones, and foreheads during its popularity in 2018, 2019, and 2020.
Endless TikTok tutorials from beauty gurus taught viewers how to apply different brands of highlighter, so everyone got on the bandwagon.
But at this point, too much highlighter is out.
One of highlighter’s biggest downfalls is that it makes people look shiny with sweat.
If highlighters are placed in the wrong areas, applied with the wrong brushes, or applied with the wrong base, then that’s where problems come in.
Adding highlighter over the wrong foundation base or forgetting to take lighting into consideration will also give you headaches.
Ditch the highlighters in 2023 to not have any of these potential problems.
Nude Lipstick
Nude lips were once popular, but shades of lipstick and lip stains that offer a bit more color is the 2023 way.
Red Apple Lipstick says that nude lipstick was a hit thanks to its sophisticated, timeless, and classy vibe.
But nude lipstick doesn’t always look good on anyone.
Don’t force a makeup trend on you if it doesn’t personally suit your style.
According to The Beauty Gypsy, nude lips can also make you look totally washed out and almost zombie-like.
You can avoid a washed-out look by finding your skin’s undertone, playing with textures, and using lip liner, but don’t bother stressing out over the subject.
Lipstick that gives the most subtle amount of color will look great on you.
Super intense blush
Why do some apply blush to their faces?
According to Makeup.com, adding the right color and amount of blush to your cheekbones will give you a natural glow. A healthy and beautiful look.
It even defines your cheekbones more.
Blush is meant to add an ideal amount of warmth so you’ll look more sprightly, awake, and active.
The problem is when people add crazy amounts of blush. It no longer looks tasteful or natural.
Adding blush requires the right makeup brush so it all blends together flawlessly.
So if you’re going for either a deep shade of red or a playful shade of pink, don’t put too much blush to avoid giving off the look of costume makeup.
Cat-winged eyeliner
The cat-winged eyeliner was a long-lasting trend thanks to celebrities. Mila Kunis, Kate Moss, Scarlett Johansson, and Lauren Conrad all sported this look.
100% Pure even says that cat-winged eyeliner has been labeled timeless and classic.
This style dates back to the ancient Egyptian empire.
But in 2023, there are variations to this that aren’t so typical or overdone.
Double-winged eyeliner is the newest trend. Watch Natalie Portman in “Black Swan” from 2010 and you’ll see her double-winged eyeliner standing out in certain scenes.
Wearing double-winged eyeliner gives off a style that the ordinary cat-winged eyeliner lacks.
Heavy concealer
It is perfectly fine to use a small amount of concealer. Just apply it to the inner halves of your under-eye area, where there are fewer lines for it to settle into.
And always moisturize before applying makeup. Hydrated skin is plumper and less crepe-y, so your concealer will go on more smoothly.
Contrasting colors for eyes and lips
Don’t use bright colors on both your eyes and lips. This can make your makeup look too busy and overwhelming.
Instead, choose colors that complement each other with creating a competition with makeup on your face.
Manicure with intricate designs
Nail trends have shifted away from voluminous decor, extreme length, and flashy designs.
Instead, nail designers are focusing on minimal details, such as abstract applications, monochrome prints, and one-color palettes.
You can still experiment with metallic shades and unusual colors, but the overall trend is towards simplicity.
