It’s hard to keep up with trends since everyone has a different style. Age is also a huge factor when choosing what to wear or which style to pick. Read on to see which styles may not be the best fit for you.
Big hair-don’t
Volume is trendy but like anything else that’s overdone, it won’t look right. Older people think getting such a style done makes them look younger but it’s actually the opposite. Don’t go heavy, if your wrinkles are baggy.
Extra long hair
Shorter hairstyles are not only easier to manage, but they can also be more flattering on mature faces. Long hair can often weigh down the face and make it look older, while shorter styles can help to create a more youthful appearance.
Matching lipstick to outfits
Debatable, since the make-up community does recommend that lipstick should somewhat go with an outfit. But there are certain choices to avoid.
A bright red sweater with matching bright red lipstick is often associated as a “mom-style”.
Jeggings
They may be comfortable, and will fit on most body types, but jeggings are not jeans and aren’t always flattering on every body type.
Large jewelry
Having a beautiful necklace to wear is certainly lovely to look at but big, showy ones aren’t really trendy. Thin and delicate ones are the way to go now. Match with earrings for a chic look.
Overly done eyebrows
Overly plucked eyebrows was the trend in the ’90s and early 2000s. Almost everyone did it then. Leave the look in the past though since “natural” has become the new trend nowadays.
Jersey dress
Cotton dresses are comfortable and versatile, but they can be tricky to style. If you’re not careful, they can make you look older than you are.
Pastels
Wearing pastels has been around for awhile but it’s not always flattering. Monochromatic outfits with the same shades can make a woman fade. Pair pastels with a darker shade to look more fashionable and youthful.
Floor length skirts
Overly-long pieces of clothing or hair aren’t as flattering as they once were. Floor-length skirts can hide a woman’s figure. That’s not exactly flattering since curves are beautiful. Go for a tighter top with a looser floor-length skirt if you still want to rock the style.
Turtleneck sweaters
Some women think covering their neck up is the way to go once they become self-conscious. Be careful with turtlenecks.
A dark turtleneck on fair skin, or a light turtleneck on darker skin could create a huge contrast, bringing more attention to the neck. It’s not a big deal but sometimes, showing that neck is actually sexier.
Wearing the same hairstyle
While some women will change hairstyles in a few months or a year, others choose to wear their hair the same way for years. The problem is it does get old, figuratively and literally. Don’t be scared to change things up a bit.
Dark lipstick
Certain occasions could call for a darker shade. But lips might become thinner and paler as the years go by. A dark lip reveals inevitable signs of aging so go for a nude color which could work better for you.
Matchy jewelry
The legendary Coco Chanel once advised women that before leaving home, it’s always a good idea to stop, look in the mirror, and take one thing off.
Wearing too much jewelry that match, for example, can weigh someone down. Break them up and wear one piece at a time. You’ll find it’s easier to match with outfits.
Loud nail polish
Nudes and colder colors are the trend nowadays, but there are those who still go for sparkly and bright shades.
Loud and sparkly nails give the wrong type of attention to one’s hands. It’s not flattering especially with age. A lighter nail makes one look younger and tanner too.
Baggy outfits
For some people, getting older means shifting to baggier outfits. Oversized outfits may be in fashion, but it can make you look older.
Tent-like and baggy dresses won’t accentuate the body. No one wants to look careless. A good combination of baggy and tight when done right can be way more flattering.
Tan pantyhose
Tights will either compliment or ruin an outfit. They were intended to make one look younger, but that’s not the case these days.
Some types of pantyhose (shiny ones especially) may not exactly flatter a woman’s image. Darker colors or even see through would be a better option.
Heavy eyeliner
Eyeliner style has changed over the years. Dark and heavy eyeliner can get heavy, adding years to a woman’s actual age.
Make-up gets smudgy after a few days. The eyeliner gets stuck in areas that accentuate fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes. The eyeliner doesn’t exactly cover up wrinkles.
Brooch
Wearing a brooch was once considered fashionable and “vintage”. But that’s not always true. Wear them with caution, especially if it’s a family heirloom.
Brooches were all the rage decades ago. If you still choose to wear one, a smaller brooch will add detail to your outfit.
Capri pants
Capri pants may be comfortable but they aren’t always flattering for older women. Many fashion experts say capris should be put back in the closet forever.
Tweed it out
It’s been popular over the many years but it might be best to set aside the tweed now. The fabric is heavy and serious, which doesn’t make one look younger.
Try something more flattering. Suit fabrics like window panes or pinstripes will work better.
Cardigans
Cardigans are a go-to during fall and when it starts getting breezy. They’re snuggle-much but not exactly stylish.
They also make the person wearing them look much older since it doesn’t flatter the body. A comfortable and stylish jacket or a cool blazer looks better.
Big scarves
Scarves can be cool since they feel like a warm hug. Practical for the winter, but not exactly fashionable especially when not worn right. Forget that colorful scarf. A nice necklace is way better to keep that youthful vibe.
Shoulder pads
Shoulder pads have made a sort of comeback after being around from the 1930s through the 1980s. If you’re going to a ’70s themed party, go for it. But there are styles that put emphasis on shoulders without needing huge pads.
Chunky Highlights
Chunky highlights done ’90s style will make you look older. It’s balayage-style highlights that’s become the trend nowadays. A good stylist can make you look really cool and young.
Stripy highlights are outdated too, so consult with your local hairdresser who will probably go for a balayage.
