There are so many new things to learn and unlearn once we reach the age of 50.
We experience a lot of physical changes. That’s why the routines we had when we were younger are no longer applicable because our features can change somewhat with extra lines and wrinkles.
What you can get away with not doing when you were younger will no longer work for mature women.
Mistake #1: Not exfoliating

For a smooth, natural look, you really need to have a great base. That means you need to have skin that’s free from impurities, and dead skin cells. Exfoliating is the way to go. Get an exfoliating scrub and place it where your shampoo and conditioner are in the shower. So you don’t forget, you can always schedule certain days for exfoliating. You can exfoliate every Monday and Friday or Tuesday and Friday, it’s up to you.

Mistake #2: Heavy foundation
There is no need to wear a heavy foundation that makes you look like a painting. All you need to do is dab a pea-sized amount on your cheeks, chin, nose, and forehead. Use a foundation brush to blend them seamlessly.
You need the foundation to cover up the redness and even out your skin tone, not to transform your face into another skin tone. Dab and blend. That’s it.

Mistake #3: Too much concealer
It’s important to use the right color of concealer that matches your skin tone. It can look like you have too much concealer and that doesn’t look natural anymore, does it?
Like foundation, just dab, and blend. You can create a big triangle anymore with concealer because it’ll expose the fine lines and wrinkles under and around the eyes. And always blend outward.

Mistake #4: Applying blush on the apples of the cheek
When we were younger, we were taught to apply blush on the apples of the cheeks. That works when we were younger. But as we age, unfortunately, the skin on our cheeks begins to sag. And when you apply blush on the apples, the placement of the blush looks unnatural.
It’s better to apply it on top of the cheeks going upward to the corner of the eye and just by the eyebrow. This trick will slim down your face and lift it at the same time.

Mistake #5: Not grooming eyebrows
Sometimes, women are too busy to do their makeup or don’t know too much about applying makeup. Experts will say, as long as you come out with great-looking eyebrows and lipstick, you’re good to go.
Besides trimming your eyebrow hair to give it shape, give it some color and brush it so it’s perfectly groomed.

Mistake #6: Black eyeliner
If you loved black eyeliner when you were younger, it may be time to let it go once you reach 50. Black eyeliner gives off a harsher look and it doesn’t look as good with drooping or hooded eyes anymore.
You can use brown or navy eyeliner instead.

Mistake #7: Wearing dark matte lipstick
When we got older, our lips get thinner. Wearing dark matte lipstick makes it look thinner and makes fine lines on your lips more obvious. How do you make your lips look fuller? Apply lipliner and top it off with hydrating glossy lipstick.
ou can also just use the lipliner and apply lipgloss on top to moisturize and add volume to your lips.

Mistake #8: Not moisturizing the eye area
Mature women need to know one thing, moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Always moisturize your skin before adding anything else.
Before you add makeup to your eyes, add moisturizer first. This will brighten your eye area and highlight your eye color.

Mistake #9: Forgetting to prime eyelids
After moisturizing your eye area, apply primer. This will provide a smoother base for your makeup and will prevent it from sliding down your eyes.
It will also even out any discoloration around your eye and brighten your eye makeup at the same time.

Mistake #10: Not concealing dark circles under the eye
Always apply concealer under your eye to even out the color, especially if you have dark circles. You can use your finger to dab and blend but always blend outward and upward.
You can use your ring finger to pat and blend because it’s the weakest finger. But if you’re more comfortable using your other fingers, remember to pat lightly.

Mistake #11: The waterline
Applying eyeliner on the eyelid isn’t exactly a big mistake but eyelids get smaller and droopier as a woman ages. Applying eyeliner on the lids makes them look thicker than it actually is and gives a bolder, harsher look. You can apply brown or navy eyeliner on the upper waterline instead.
This will keep the eyeliner present but thinner. For the bottom waterline, use a lighter color or maybe nude eyeliner. This will brighten up your eyes.

Mistake #12: Putting mascara on the bottom lashes
Mascara on the bottom lashes for mature women is not a very good idea. It makes the eyes look smaller and highlights wrinkles under the eyes as well. If you really want to add makeup to the bottom of your eyes, use dark eyeshadow and smudge it under the lashes and just below the waterline.
Apply to only about 2/3 of the eye to keep the eye from looking too small.

Mistake #13: Forgetting to clean up under the eye area
Cleaning up under the eye with concealer will lift the eyes up. Use a concealer that’s a different color from the one you used earlier. Dab a little under the outer corner. Using a dry sponge, dab the concealer upwards to lift the eyes up.
It’s important to always apply makeup outwards and upwards to lift the sagging skin on the face. And always use a little at first. It’s easy to remedy little makeup than to have to correct overdone makeup without removing everything.

DON’T: Use too much highlighter
A lot of them believe it’s the “fountain of youth” but what it does is actually emphasize your wrinkles. When that happens, it makes you look even older than your age.
We’re not saying no to highlighter. Just use a minimal amount to “highlight.”

Solution: How to wear highlighter
When it comes to using highlighter, less is more. There’s no need to go overboard with it. Use a highlighter brush and dab a little on top of your cheekbones.
Just a little to add a little sparkle. And then use a little brush and dab between your eyes. That’s all you need!
The “Disappearing Cat Eye”
Mature women see cat eyes on younger women and think ‘I want that, too.’ Or maybe you used to apply this method to your eyes when you were younger and you want to keep doing it. The problem is, with age, mature women’s eyelids become hooded or they now droop even lower.
So when you apply cat eyes method to your own eyes, it disappears. It’s now hidden behind the folds of your eyes. You’ll just waste the makeup and the time spent on a method that disappears with your open eyes.
Solution: Smudge eyeliner slightly upward
The cat eye method is really a great way to highlight the eyes but what can you do as a mature woman? Heather came up with an alternative using an eyeliner pencil. Apply it normally and go ahead and draw a little bit past your eyes.
The next step is important. Using your fingers or a small brush, smudge it up. This is a more natural look that highlighters your eyes, too.
Lipliners that are too dark
Dark lip liners can be very dramatic but it mostly works for younger people. But when mature women use a dark lipliner, when your lipstick smudges off later in the day, you’re left with dark lips.
Do you want a look like that?
Solution: Match liner to lipstick
The best way to do this is to use a lip liner that matches your lipstick. If you’re using pink lipstick, match it with a pink liner as well.
And feel free to use a sparkly lip gloss with almost the same color to brighten up your lips.
Over Bronzing
If you’re looking too pale and want to look like you’ve had some time under the sun, a bronzer can be used to show that. But some women tend to overuse bronzers.
They think any skin that seems too pale MUST be covered. But when you’re done, it doesn’t look natural and it just looks awful.
Solution: a natural glow
It’s better to use a bronzing spray for that tanned look. Spray it and blend it on your skin with a paper towel. What you want is a nice, healthy, natural glow.
You don’t want cakey make-up that just screams you’re trying too hard.
Over Done Brows
Dark brows work for younger people and maybe a few mature women. But for most mature women, it doesn’t look natural and obviously looks like it’s make-up.
Remember, what works when you were younger doesn’t always work when you’re older.
Solution: more natural brow
Darker brows don’t necessarily work for mature women because of their sparse brows. Do this instead. Use a color that’s closest to your brow hair color. The next step is to fill in the spaces between the hair. This will make it look more natural.
Near the end, when there’s little hair, carefully fill it in. Don’t forget the eyebrow arch!
“Back to the 60s eyeshadow”
Maybe it’s a way to relive youthful days? But using sparkly bright eyeshadow, and using too much of it, makes your make-up look a little tacky. Mature women don’t need that much sparkle.
It’s pretty yes but it’s going to make mature women look like they never evolved. Is that you? Of course not!
Solution: Dab a little eyeshadow on top of the lid
You can’t add too much of this eyeshadow to your eyelids but it doesn’t mean you have to say no to sparkly eyeshadow. Just apply a little on the center of the eyelid and use your finger to spread it across the eyelids.
That’s it! You still have that subtle sparkly hint and look as natural as you can get.
Over contouring
Some people become obsessive over contouring. It may have worked when you were younger but it’s overkill for mature women. Different types of make-up are used for contouring and it just becomes too much.
Plus it overemphasizes the wrinkles on your face. Do you want people to spot your wrinkles from a mile away?
Solution: Lightly contour using two brushes
Do this instead. Use two brushes, one for blending and one for contouring. Apply your make-up on your cheekbones and then blend and contour.
It will look more natural and defined.
Dated 1960’s Lip Look
Do you know that 1960s lipstick with all the glossy sheen? It went on to be used in the 1970s to match all the shiny outfits probably. That glossy lip look is best kept in that era. Don’t use it now.
It just makes your wrinkles and fine lines even more visible. And it can get really distracting. Instead of noticing your beautiful smile, all we can see is your glossy lips.
Solution: More natural/less shine lipstick
Go for matte lipstick. It doesn’t matter which color. You can go for peach, pink, nude, or even light red.
Just don’t add the gloss and shine.
Caked on Powder
One mistake that mature women make is to keep using make-up in powder form. Stop! Using powder makeup is a no-no for women over 50. The powder settles in your fine lines and wrinkles and makes you look even older than your age.
Then some women try to cover this up by adding more makeup and it just looks so cakey. Stop using powdered makeup.
Solution: Use an anti-shine cream
Use cream makeup instead. It blends in seamlessly on your face and gives you that natural look. Be sure to get the anti-shine makeup and apply on your problem areas.
Remember, a little goes a long way. And always blend!
Overdone Smokey Eye
So many women still believe that whatever makeup they did when they were younger can still be done when they were younger. On one hand, yes, it can still be done but it has to be updated for your reality. The reality is once a woman gets older, a lot of body parts start to droop, including the eyes. And yes, you may have successfully applied the smokey eye makeup at the start but pretty soon, gravity will take over.
The fine lines will reveal themselves and all anybody will see is your makeup going wrong. They also make the mistake of using black eyeshadow for smokey eyes and it just makes the problem even worse.
Solution: Go more subtle with lighter colors
For a smokey eye look for mature women, go for darker colors (but not black). Like everything else Heather has done, just a little dab goes a long way.
In this video, she used purple eyeshadow but you can also a dark brown color. You can definitely look glam without going black.
