There are a lot of fashion and styling tips given by so many different experts out there. Sometimes, it’s hard to know which one will work and which ones you need to stay away from. Then there are times when a fashion tip sounds legit but it doesn’t actually suit you. Plus these tips can actually add years to your look. Let’s begin with:
Wearing flats all the time
We get it, wearing flats are very comfortable but it does age you. You don’t need to wear really high heels, you can go for kitten heels or platform wedges. When you go higher, even just a little, the shoes will help lengthen your legs and make you look younger.

Jacket around the waist
How do you wear your jacket? Do you drape it over your shoulders like a cape, wear it over your arms and shoulders, or do you tie it around your waist? If you don’t want to look older, then stop tying your jacket around your waist. It will make your hips look wider and your look messier.
Stay away from the mini
How short is too short? When you’re a woman who has reached a certain age, anything mini is too short. What if you have great legs that you want to show off? Wear an A-line skirt or dress with heels. It’ll even make your legs look longer and you’ll look taller. Just because the mini skirt looks cute does not mean it could look cute on you as well. Work with what you have and what will make you look good.
The fountain of youth
A lot of women scoff when they hear the word “collagen.” They don’t think it’s worth it but the truth is, as we get older, our collagen stores get depleted. Our skin loses it elasticity because we don’t replace the collagen we lose. You can either apply it to your skin or add powdered collagen to your water. Doing this regularly will do wonders for your skin, hair, and nail health, joint health, and gut health
Will you keep it moist?
On that same note, it’s important to keep using moisturizer. Drink lots of water every day to keep you hydrated inside and out. Apply moisturizer in the morning or at night. As we get older, our skin and body needs us to help it function the ways it supposed to do.
Change your style
It’s okay to change your style. It’s okay to evolve and grow. The important part here is to make sure you are comfortable with your new style. If you’re not comfortable with your new style, you won’t be able to pull it off and you’ll just look like a mess. Once you find your new style, own it!
No mascara on the lower lashes
Do you know what mascara on your lower lashes does? It makes your eyes look droopier and emphasize the dark circles under your eyes. Instead, curl your upper lashes and apply a volumizing mascara. It’ll open up your eyes.
Too much concealer
Sometimes, just enough is too much and a little goes a long way. A good concealer will definitely cover dark circles and age spots. However, if it’s not the right color or applies incorrectly, it can highlight your flaws even more. Start with just a little and use your finger to dab and blend. If it looks like it’s not enough, add a little bit more. Stop starting with too much because it’s harder to blend and becomes cakey and a hot mess.
Deep, dark lipstick
A deep, dark lipstick worked when we were younger. Now that we’re older, it just makes our lips look thinner. Wear a lighter shade instead and apply lip gloss. The gloss will give your lips an extra shine and make your lips look fuller.
Tacky shoes
Sometimes, these shoes are made to sell for more money. They were not made because it’s creating a trend. People buy them because of the label and not the design. The truth is, these shoes will make you look older because only mature women will buy these shoes, believing they’ll look younger. News flash: it doesn’t.
Dark waterline
When we were younger, we sometimes add dark eyeliner to the waterline for more dramatic eye makeup. Once you’re reached a certain age, this application no longer works because it makes the eye look smaller and older. If you want to add eyeliner on your waterline, be sure to use a nude color.
No more glittery eyes
It was a lot of fun trying on glittery eye makeup when we were younger. Unfortunately, it’s a very dated look and it emphasizes wrinkles and fine lines. If you can’t let go just yet, just dab a little on the inner corner of your eyes to make your eyes stand out.
Too much contouring
The purpose of contouring is to define the shape of your face. The problem is it’s so easy to go from the right amount to “a little too much.” If you cannot remember when enough is enough, always remember less is more. If you have to ask “is this too little or is this enough?”, then it’s probably enough.
More than just pink
Do you want to appear younger? Then keep blush to a minimum. When applying blush to your brush, make sure to just tap the brush on the color. Then blend, blend, blend! If you’re using blush in cream form, use your finger to dab and blend.
Blunt, choppy hair
A choppy bob looks great. It’s very low maintenance and easy to style. However, it’s not highly recommended for older women because it highlights harsh angles of your face. Opt for a soft cut with layers of waves instead.
Frumpy jeans
Mom jeans, the high-waisted style, are back! They don’t look the same though. The waist is quite narrow and the leg is very straight. If you’re going to wear this, just make sure to find a pair that sits well on you.
Follow fashion trends
There are fashion trends that are very cool to wear no matter your age. Then there are trends that don’t suit everyone. Just make sure that if you want to follow trends, you’re on top of it. If you follow outdated trends, it’ll just make you look outdated and unaware. It’s better to invest in a timeless fashion style and then apply a few fashion trends you like every now and then.
Want to wear wigs?
Wearing wigs is the craze now, especially since so many celebrities and well-known personalities wear them as part of their outfit. Did you know that wearing wigs isn’t just putting them on? Not every wig will fit your style. The best wig for you will always be what looks natural on you, to you, and your lifestyle.
Very dark hair color
Raven hair may not be the best idea anymore when you get older. It can make you look harsher and direct attention to your fine lines and wrinkles. Go for a more natural hair color and add highlights to give yourself a new look.
A Bohemian look
Wearing a Bohemian outfit is okay from time to time. However, if you’re not careful, then you can look like you are from the 1960s (even if you really are)! Pair your Bohemian tops with a solid, structured bottom or your Boho bottoms with a plain top. Mix it up, keep people guessing.
Grandma cardigans
Yes, they’re super comfortable, easy to wear, and go with everything. However, there’s a certain cardigan style that will make you look grandmotherly instantly. That’s the cardigan with buttons. If that’s not your intention, it’s best to stick to open, thin cardigans instead.
Fresh-faced look
We used to want a matte look for our makeup when we were younger. Now, it highlights our facial flaws. Opt for a fresher-face look instead.
Baggy blazers
These baggy blazers may have been a trend but not all trends are good. Did this even look good at any age? It’s better to stick structure, tailored blazers to make you look good.
Monochrome style
While a monochrome outfit can make you look taller and thinner, it can also make you look older. We’re not saying stop wearing monochrome outfits, especially if they look good on you, but add another color to balance it. If you’re wearing an all-dark outfit, add a lighter-colored scarf or bag. If you’re going light, add a dark belt.
No more tweed
Tweed has always been associated with smug professors. Anytime anyone wears tweed, there’s that automatic assumption. If there’s a tweed coat or jacket or skirt that you really want to wear, pair it with something like pointy heels or slim pants.
Knitwear
When it gets cold enough, we all reach for that comfortable knitted sweater or top. The problem though is that it looks really big or frumpy on us. Pair it with a stylish piece of clothing, like a pencil skirt or boots.
Long skirts
Long skirts can really look frumpy if paired with the wrong clothes. Make sure that you coordinate your outfit with what suits you. A long wide skirt must be paired with a short, fitted top. A long fitted skirt should be paired with a short, loose top. As for shoes, wear shoes with pointy heels.
Big jewelry
Fashion used to be all about going big and overdoing it. Not anymore. Ditch the big jewelry and go for classic pieces. Pair your dangling earrings with a simple necklace chain. Or wear a classic watch and a statement ring. That’s it. It’s okay to go simple with jewelry.
Turtlenecks
If you’re not too proud of your neck, then a turtleneck is a great way to hide it. Take note though, hiding your neck emphasizes your face. If you’ve got fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots, yes, that’s right. They’re going to be all on display. If you really want to wear a turtleneck but not emphasize your flaws, pair it with a trendy blazer or a nice belt to draw attention away from your face.
Sheer pantyhose
The only color of pantyhose any woman needs to wear now is black or nude. Anything else will draw attention away from your outfit. If that’s your intention, then maybe you can go for it.
