What type of makeup or even color makeup will flatter grey hair? Are there even colors that work with grey hair? Yes, there are a lot!
Plums, violets, and pinks are just a few of the colors that will go well with grey hair. Not convinced? Let 65-year-old makeup artist Kerry-Lou show you how to work these colors with your silver or grey hair.
Pick a lightweight foundation
Get started with a lightweight foundation for a more natural look. Be sure to get a foundation that matches your skin tone.
Start with the areas that need more coverage and blend it with the rest of your skin. No worries about getting coverage on the rest of your skin. Just blend it all on your skin. Remember to add foundation below the jawline as well.
It’s always great to start with a great, well, foundation to give you a seamless, natural look.

Add an under-eye concealer
Use a small brush to apply concealer under your eyes. The small brush will make it easier for you to reach the hard-to-reach spots under your eyes. Finish off by blending the concealer with your ring finger. Remember to just dab with your finger. The skin under your eyes is thin and delicate. You can make the dark spots worse when you pull the skin even with your ring finger.
Apply a translucent white powder under the eye
The translucent white powder is great for two things. One, it’ll set your concealer. Two, it’ll catch any fallout from the eyeshadow you’ll apply later. Use a wide brush to blend it well.
Touch up blemishes with concealer
Once you’ve applied your base, some blemishes might appear or be more apparent. You can use a touch-up stick or concealer to cover those blemishes. Make sure that the color matches your skin tone.
Apply contour (but don’t overdo it)
One rule with contour: don’t overdo it! Stick to the basics: on the jawline, under your cheekbones, and the sides of your forehead. You can also add a little on the bridge of your nose to add dimension. A little still goes a long way.
Apply blush
Add glow to your face with blush. Start from the top of your cheekbones and around your cheekbone area. Use a wide brush to make the blush is well-distributed.
For eyes, start with an eyeshadow base
Use a light color for your eyeshadow base. Apply it on the eyelid and around your eye until just below the eyebrow. Blend, blend, blend. If you want to dry your makeup quicker or remove excess powder, use a hand fan to do the job.
Find an eyeshadow palette with plum and coordinating shades
Now for the rest of the eyeshadow, this is where you can use your plums and violet colors. Start by using a light plum color and apply it to the lid. Blend. If you’re unsure about going too dark, then go for a color that’s lighter but a little darker than your base.
After applying a light shade, add a darker shade in the crease of eye
Use a darker violet color next and apply it to the crease. Make sure that you’re using the right brush for applying and blending eyeshadow. Are you comfortable with going darker? Apply dark-colored eyeshadow on the outer end of the lid and blend.
Apply highlighter under the brow
To finish off your eyeshadow, apply a highlighter under the brow. This will definitely highlight the colors of your eyeshadow and brighten your eye color. Do you see the difference?
Add the lower liner
Use an angled brush to apply color under your lower lashes. Go for a color that’s in the middle tone of your eyeshadow colors. This will blend will with your look. Do the same for the upper lashes for a softer look.
Curl the lashes
It’s time to curl the lashes before your mascara. Remember to curl your lashes in three different places. This will prevent giving your lashes a L-shape when seen from the side.
Apply mascara
If you have mature skin and hooded eyes, it’s better to use volumizing mascara. Apply carefully and follow the curls of your lashes.
Shape and fill in brows
Use a brush to sweep the eyebrow hairs in one direction. Using cream makeup, add a dollop onto your brush and fill in the spaces carefully on your eyebrows. A little goes a long way again in this case.
Line lips slightly over the lipline
Make sure your lipliner is sharp so you can use the tip to establish the shape of your lips. Go slightly beyond the lipline to make your lips a little bigger if you have small or thin lips. No need to do that if you have fuller lips.
Fill in lips
Use a makeup brush to soften the lipliner first before applying lipstick. To retain the soft feature of your lipliner, use a lip brush to apply your lipstick. You can go for matte (like Kerry-Lou) or go for glossy. Use what works for you.
Add highlighter on the cheekbone
Add a highlighter on your cheekbone to give you a more glowing look. What do you think?
If desired, add false eyelashes
If you want to add a little more pizzazz to your look, you can use false eyelashes. Just remember to give yourself a lot of time for a seamless application. Roll them between your fingers before applying them to make them more supple. Use a tweezer so you can apply glue to the back of the lashes without any mess. Apply it on top of your lashes.
