Do you have your own beauty and skincare routine? Have long have you had your routine? If you’re already over 50 and you’re practicing the same beauty routine from your 20s or 30s, it’s time to make a change, dear.
Being a woman over 50, there are many physical changes you will go through. The routines we had when we were younger no longer apply. Of course, there are some steps we can still apply. Let’s begin!
The important first step
Since our skin loses oil as we get older, our skin doesn’t retain moisture as well. Remember, dry skin will highlight fine lines and wrinkles. Hydrate, drink a lot of water and apply moisturizer. Having moist skin will give you a smoother look.

Start with primer
Do you want your makeup to last all day? Then always apply primer first. The primer will smoothen your skin and hide your fine lines and wrinkles. Plus when you choose the right primer, it can hydrate and moisturize your skin as well. See? One product can solve two problems.
The key to making sure you have full coverage is to apply thin layers of makeup. It’s easier to add more makeup than to remove too much makeup. Be patient and apply one step at a time.
Aside from applying thin layers, use the right color, too. It will help your makeup to look more natural. To guide you with the right color, remember these tips. For redness, use a yellow or green corrector. For purple or brown, use an orange corrector. For blue, use peach or pink.
Blend your makeup with the right tools. This is especially when you want to conceal the dark circles under your eye. Apply a little bit of concealer on the inner corner of your eye and blend with your fingertip making your way out and down. You can also use a sponge for blending.
Avoid powder foundation because this will settle inside your fine lines and wrinkles. Liquid foundation will add more hydration and give your makeup a dewy finish. Opt for products with hyaluronic acid and vitamin C to give you a fresh makeup look.
We can’t forget the eyes and lashes. Bring back life to your eyes with matte eyeshadow. Stick to lighter colors to get brighter eyes. Continue with applying eyeliner on the upper and lower lash line. Finish it off with a light layer of mascara.
Want to make your eyes pop? Curl those lashes. If you want no-fuss curling, heat up your eyelash curler with a blow dryer for about three seconds before you use it.
Have you noticed that when you apply lipstick, the product just bleeds around the lips? It’s a reminder for us to exfoliate our lips. Use a lip scrub or a soft toothbrush to exfoliate your lips before putting on your lip products.
Some women over 50 have very thin eyebrows. There are a lot of brow-defining products you can use to make them look fuller. Use a gel pencil to fill in the rest of your eyebrows to create a natural look.
Done are the days when we experiment with our look using makeup. Now, it’s all about knowing your best features and using makeup to highlight them. Use a bronzer and contouring brush to accomplish this.
Always take off your makeup before going to bed. We don’t know what’s worse: waking up with makeup all over your pillow or waking up with clogged pores. Take it all off!
It’s always better to get your natural dose of Vitamin D through sun exposure but not for too long. Sun exposure is especially harder on your skin when you are over the age of 50. Blemishes and sun spots increase over age. There is a solution. Apply sunscreen whenever you go out into the sun. Wear a hat, too!
Your pearly whites are still part of your face so take care of them, too. Go to your dentist regularly to remove those coffee and wine stains. Have your dentist keep your teeth in great shape.
Gone are the days when we try our best to be productive with very little sleep. It was okay when we were younger. Now that we’re over the age of 50, sleeping fewer hours will show on our skin. Lack of sleep creates dark circles under the eyes and creates dull and lifeless skin. Sleep for seven to eight hours every night, your skin will thank you for it.
Remember to exfoliate regularly. Our skin regenerates every 30 days so dead skin cells can accumulate on our skin. Get rid of it by exfoliating and brightening up your skin.
Beauty articles say women over 50 need to stay away from shimmery makeup. You can still wear it! Just choose nude shimmers and apply them on your lid and under the brow bone. That’s it! It’ll light up your face.
Keep updating your look. We know it can be tough to look for new products and colors that will suit your look now but it’s worth it. There’s no sense in using the same products that will no longer look good on you. Start small. Start with your hair first or with a new moisturizer then work your way toward the other products.
Use a setting spray to keep your makeup in check. It’s good to know that there’s a product out there that lets our makeup stay on so we don’t have to worry. Once you’re done applying your makeup, use a setting spray, and done!
When you update your look, always look for beauty products designed specifically for mature women. They’re designed for your needs so take advantage. Don’t buy them all at once though. Keep experimenting with the right products for you.
Do you still want to use powder makeup? If you have oily or combination skin then it’s still okay to use powder. If you have dry skin, apply sparingly on the T-zone only. Use a smaller brush for precise application and keep it thin!
Invest in healthy skin for you. Visit your dermatologist for regular facial treatments. They can also recommend the best products and skin regimen for you.
Less is more should be the mantra of women over 50 because it’s true. Use makeup to highlight your best feature, not all of your features. Remember, don’t try too hard to conceal your flaws. The more you do, the more you’ll bring the flaws out into the light.
